Steve, bit late reading your post so you are probably already here:
In general EES is causing extended waits in many places around the EU but fortunately in Alicante the airport are handling it well, at least that's been my experience.
When we arrived on April 8th airport staff were directing all UK passport holders into the area where the EES registration m/c's are located. As we had already registered on a previous visit in February we avoided going into the registration queue and went straight to the e-gates in front of the border control desks.
When our passports were read and photo compared a message popped up saying something like "wait for assistance" - then after about 10 seconds the gate opened, out to the border control booth, passport stamped and on our way.
Note: that was pre EES going live on April 10, hopefully it is still the same.
Leaving Alicante in March, no issues at all.
