Hello,

I'm looking for information about the current Covid-19 situation around Denia.  I booked a holiday apartment  on Airbnb in January for a holiday during August and have paid half the amount when I booked.  I'm hesitating about whether to cancel my trip, especially as I've seen cases increasing in some parts of Spain this last week, plus with the doors now wide open to holidaymakers from several countries, together with increased risks (I do realise that I'm an overseas holidaymaker too!) I'm feeling nervous about visiting the region.  Is it an area visited mainly by Spanish people or overseas visitors?  I live in France (we wear masks a lot where I am) and we are driving down, so air travel and related controls aren't an issue.

I've also heard that you have to book beach space in advance in some areas of Spain.  Is this the case around Denia? Also, are restaurants and bars open as normal (with distancing measures in place I assume)?

Thanks to anyone who can provide info.

Denia is a working Spanish town, being the ‘county’ town for the area of Northern Costa blanca. Like most coastal towns around here, it has a large foreign resident population and a marina populated by expensive yachts from various places.

Yes, it attracts both kinds of tourists, Spanish and foreign, but not quite the same as towns further south ie Benidorm and areas further down, and usually not quite as many. Many Spanish people, especially from the main cities, have second homes/holiday houses all along this coast.

If what you are asking is: can it be guaranteed that I won’t catch Covid, then the answer is obviously no. However, strict social distancing measures are in place, mascarillas are compulsory usually with gloves also in all supermarkets and retail establishments. Most bars and restaurants have reopened, again with distancing, but may not be offering such a wide choice as before, partly due to the practical difficulties with menus etc, although some are using a phone app.

I cannot comment on the booking of beach space, but ti is quite likely to be a requirement as many other resorts are doing the same thing.

Police and Guardia do stop people who are not wearing masks as required and it’s a hefty instant fine if you can’t produce one!

No one can make your decision for you, the situation is as likely to be as good or as bad as anywhere else. The Valencia region has not had as many cases as other areas and the Valencian government has been very proactive in implementing controls, but nothing these days can be guaranteed.

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Thanks for your reply.  As I wrote in my original message I live in France so we'll be driving down so I've no worries on the air transport front.  We'll make a decision during the next few days and if we don't visit Denia this year, we'll visit another time.

Thank you for taking time to reply.  I found your comments very helpful.

Hi Nicky - I’m here in Denia now & I feel safe. Pretty much everyone is adhering to the social distancing & wearing masks. As most stuff is outdoors, I don’t think it’s a problem. We were down at Playa De Las Marinas the other evening & no didn’t have to book, though it was still pretty busy even at 7.30pm. We’ve been out for meals & into the shops as well. I’d say come!! I’ve been very impressed with how the phasing out of lockdown has been handled here. Much better than back in the UK, I’d say x
