My partner and I are moving to the Pego area soon and would like to make serious efforts to learn the language. I've read some local authorities provide free Spanish lessons for immigrants, are there any in the Pego/Denia/Oliva area? Anyone got any other recommendations - personal teachers, paid language classes, etc.?

I'm surprised there are no replies to this. Has no-one in the Denia area who reads this forum ever attempted to learn Spanish?

I speak fluent Spanish and can help you.  I started by learning vocabulary.

If you want to send sonne words, I can list then and translate - about

10 words I can send the words translated back.  that's how I started.

I would suggest that you go onto Facebook, as there are much more active groups on there and they will be able to recommend Spanish tutors.  We are buying a property in the area this year, and I started to seriously learn Spanish last year.   I have been going to an evening class in the UK, plus doing lots of stuff online (SpanishwithPaul on YouTube and his paid course is excellent, plus Duolingo the mobile app).  When we are spending more time in Spain I am going to join a conversation group and get some lessons, and there are also courses held in the Jalon Valley where you attend each day for a week.  I am enjoying learning the beautiful language, and always proud when I can understand someone speaking to me in Spain and I can reply!!

Hi,

We have just arrived from nz and will be settling in Denia once our house is built next year, we do however want to start learning Spanish as soon as possible.

We are here for May and June and then again in October, I would be grateful for any advice.

Gracias

Britta and Chris

Dear Britta and Chris

I have been speaking Spanish, and writing it, since the 1970s. I went to evening classes and to tutors and worked in Ibiza and Tenerife for 5 years.  You have chosen the best way to learn Spanish - by speaking and listening to Spanish people.

At first I bought a Spanish/English dictionary - about A5 size and learned a new word each day.  I would then revise what I learned and the next week I learned 5 nnore words.

I used to speak to receptionists about nnore pillows, blankets, keys and I would use the words and write thenn down.  I didn't worry about the verbs that canne later.

You can always use words instead of verbs for the past present and future:

yesterday  -- ayer,    hoy   -- today, now    nnanana - tonnorrow and then use vocabulary.

I'nn sure you will love it,  when I nneet Spanish people and students in Birnningha - strangers, I cant help but have a conversation with thenn.

It will take tinne but suddenly you will realise you have had a conversation with someone but was it in English or Spanish?

It is a very pretty language and there was talk in the Spanish Court that Queen ElizabethI talked with a lisp.  Out of respect and good nnanners the Court then spoke with a lisp  "th".

I hope that has helped.  I ann working on retiring in Tenerife, I can't wait to get there with this cold English weather.

Let nne know how you get on, the Spanish are lovely warnn people.

Kind regards   NNaddiex

Dear Maddie,

Thank you very much for your message, yes, it is certainly best to be in the language environment so we’ll be trying to learn many words and I think we will also go to school at some point.

We do love it here and look forward to the future of living here, all the best for you!!

Hi, I can really recommend a guy called Salvador Alemany <[email protected]> - he is Spanish and teaches English classes to groups such as shopworkers and at the local hospital to Spanish employees. He also does private tuition teaching Spanish to expats. He speaks English fluently as of course Spanish and is really conscientious. Please mention Clive recommended him if you email him.

Thank you, Clive, that sounds like a good tip. I'll get in touch with him.
