Hi.

I’m seriously considering buying in the Denia area next year; I don’t mind if it’s inland a bit and would appreciate any advice on a few things.

I’ve visited Denia on a few occasions and really like the area, the town is vibrant and there seems to be plenty to do in the vicinity.

I have a budget of about £150000 and I am ideally looking for a place with at least 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms that is not overlooked. Preferably there would be an outside space and/or a roof terrace. As I have a couple of motorcycles a garage/workshop is also important. Alternatively, is it possible to rent/buy a separate garage?

I would also appreciate any advice on the following:

Are there groups where you can learn conversational Spanish?

Are there any motorcycle Clubs in the area?

Are there any walking groups in the area?

What is the cost of living in the area for couple?

I will be visiting Denia in March next year and I realise that things may change in the meantime, but it would be very useful to receive any information before then.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Steve

Hi Steve. the best thing to do to get ana idea of what is available for your budget is to use the ‘Kyero’ website, in the first instance. This is the Spanish equivalent of Rightmove, where most properties would be advertised and can be filtered to return results within your specifications. Usefully it can also be filtered to individual villages within an area.

I cannot say definitely, but I think there are motor cycle clubs around but they are likely to be organised and run by local Spanish people who may not speak English. I have frequently seen groups of m/cycle riders around the area.

There are certainly walking groups.

Cost of living - how long is a piece of string? Sorry, but it depends on your lifestyle and requirements. We personally have found little actual difference in living costs - Spain isn’t as inexpensive as it used to be - although I know that there are many on this site who would disagree with me. Electricity is expensive - not the actual power consumed as such, but over and above that is quite a hefty set of charges for tax and green energy subsidies etc. Water isn’t too bad, but beware of any leaks etc.

There is a paper for expats called The Costa Blanca news, which carries useful adverts for all kinds of clubs, events within various towns, charities, organisations etc which is worth obtaining simply for this kind of information

Hope this is useful as some very basic information.

Hi Stephanie

Many thanks for your prompt and useful reply. I’ll use the website you recommended and it’s good to know that there are walking groups.

Thanks for the advice on hidden utilities costs, it’s the same in the UK; reasonable unit charges but high daily service costs.

Thanks again

Stev

Good advice from Stephanie there. I live 10 minutes inland from Denia, if you want any advice about towns or villages I might be able to help. Just shout.

I'd suggest creating "favourites" folders on Keyero and Rightmove, maybe also Idealista and Habitaclia. Then once you've narrowed things down a bit organise a viewing trip to look at various different properties in the different locations.

Your budget will get you what you want but remember you need to allow between 12 and 14% on top of actual purchase price to cover the 10% property tax and other purchase fees. Never use an abogado recommend by an agent and never ever pay money to an agent as a "deposit" or similar. Also, try to avoid house hunting in July or August, for a variety of reasons!

Hi Steve,

I bought a flat in the centre of Denia just under a couple of years ago but only live there part time at the moment . Its an area which just get better as you get to know it , with lots going on in town and in the surrounding areas . Its mainly Spanish , great range of restaurants and bars and functions all year round .

Good luck with your search , Warwick
