What is the equivalent over the counter painkiller to paracetamol in Spain please? I’ve heard Nolotil is sometimes given as an alternative to paracetamol in pharmacies and that’s it’s not advisable to take it. Is there anything else available and can I buy it at the supermarket? Any help and advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks

I am not a doctor but my advice would be to ask for paracetamol and make sure that is precisely what you are given.

There has been a lot of adverse publicity about Nolotil, so much so that some people carry a message in their wallet not to prescribe it if admitted to A&E. It was implicated in a story alleging it was responsible for the deaths of some northern Europeans who react badly to it.

I am not saying this is true, just reporting what has been said. So, look at what they give you, make sure the packet says Paracetamol and all will be well. There are different brands here but all Paracetamol says Paracetamol on the packet.

Hi V,

I assume what you are saying by posting that link is that Paracetamol is a medicine not a brand? Which is correct. I was just advising to ask for Paracetamol and make sure the packet dispensed IS paracetamol. Most of the Paracetamol brand distributors here in Spain have the brand name in large capital letters on the packet, and sometimes the word Paracetamol is in much smaller letters. So really just to check each time that the Farmacia assistant has given you Paracetamol.

Hi Steve,

Paracetamol is the generic name of this medicine in Spain. In some countries, paracetamol (is sometimes known as acetaminophen or acetaminophen). There are many generic brands of acetaminophen..

For "unbranded" paracetamol, ask for genérico(masculine)

genérica(feminine if asking for asprin: ie:aspirina) otherwise the chemist shop will "sell"  the "advertised" product. (which will normally cost much more)

Hello

You are right Steve, I've had various paracetamol products here, some bought over the counter, some on prescription. 2  I have at the moment are Mabo x 1g & Stada x 1g  but both say Paracetamol in bold letters on the box

Cheers

Hi,

You can only buy paracetamol in the farmacia and not in supermarkets.

If you prefer the soluble type I always use Efferalgan which comes in tablet or sachet form. I use the tablets which are about 2.60 for 40 at 500mg. You are not supposed to be able to buy the 1g tablets without a prescription but it depends on the farmacia and who is serving you as I can still get these.

I am actually holding a tube of effervescent Paracetamol in my hand this minute!!

20 x Paracetamol Qualigen 1g comprimidos effervescent tablets in a tube.

Very quick and effective. You can only buy medicines from the Farmacia.
