Thanks. Does that include savings or salaried ?

Annual income.

I don't recall the details.

I think it is 24k Euros for the first applicant and another 4k for the spouse.

Others on here will have chapter and verse.

I haven't heard any numbers for either income or savings after the transition period but our application has gone in with 10k euros savings and 500 euros/month income for the two of us (i.e. combined savings & income). However, we have also provided our UK savings details too as advised by the company who are helping us obtain residencia.

We have been advised by the same company that Alicante are asking for UK financial details in addition already.

My wife and I are in the process of obtaining residencia so we can retain as many of our pre-Brexit EU rights & privileges as possible. Although we have owned a property near Denia for 5 years, we have, to date, spent most of our time in the UK. However, this is likely to swing more and more ...

...in favour of Spain.

When we travel, we generally use my UK registered and insured car as we have a dog. I have been advised by my current insurer that they will only insure UK residents. My son works for a specialist insurance company and believes there is little chance of a UK company insuring my car when it spends equal amounts of time in the UK & Spain and I will be a Spanish resident!

His company's recommendation is to get it insured in Spain as they are likely to be more accommodating.

Has anyone had a similar issue and, if so, how have you dealt with it?

Thanks in advance!

Colin

Hi, I think we are in a similar situation to yourself, agonising, "should we, shouldn't we". We bought in 2006, expecting to retire permanently in 2008 when hubby was 65. However, being totally ransacked in 2007, Spanish insurance Co.refusing to pay out, and other time delaying situations now this year is our last chance for residency as our incomes won't meet new requirements (32,000k€ Yr) We too need to live half year in both until our UK home is ready for rental (if we choose to rent) as we couldn't afford to sell due to 40yrs profit going to Spanish CGT. We don't need to sell financially but would still be liable for the upkeep and maintenance, so am surprised when I read of other members who have kept on Uk homes not rented out and still paying for their upkeep defeating object of retiring to Spain.

We have found several obstacles we can't get over to gaining residency before January 1st. One is healthcare. If we obtain our S1,s to use in Spain we need GP use in Uk to prescribe us our medications free which we,ve checked on and apparrantly Spanish Dr,s will not prescribe 3-6mnths supply in advance as our UK GP does. On obtaining S1's for Spain, whilst having emergency use of NHS while in Uk, how can we get free medications in Uk?

Our other major obstacle is also the driving. I, ve read in this thread how we can get spanish insurance to cover our UK vehicles but we have a van bought to bring items over which were bought in Uk to replace all belongings stolen in the Spanish home. We can not replate van due to left side door and if we have a Spanish licence can't drive it in Spain on UK plates. Side door rule seems stupid to me as all vehicles have doors on left side anyway(car passenger doors??).

I read Kelvins reply re Admiral accepting insurance cover after becoming Spanish resident with amazement as we too were with Admiral and they flatly refused to cover our UK car being left in Uk if we became Spanish resident. I have read of a specialist UK insurer to cover expats but they don't have good feedback. As we already have a Spanish car in Spain, it's our van that is a problem, driving on UK plate.

We have decided (partly due to our ages 70 and 77) we won't be obtaining residency this year as we would still need to spend time in Uk home to refurbish and empty it out). Although the 90 days in then out etc determines the periods of stay, we can still get 6months in each country albeit missing out on some of the hotter weather.

Good luck with your plans, hope all goes well.

Regards

Pauline.

Sounds like you've had a few issues to deal with unfortunately! You raise an interesting point on UK GPs and prescriptions - is there an impact if you are resident in Spain?

Regarding UK registered cars, we will most likely retain my current, UK registered car for use in the UK and to drive to and from our Spanish property (with our dog). However, we will buy a Spanish registered run around for use in Spain - our UK car can just remain at our Spanish property until the drive back. An additional expense but better than re-registering my UK car with the associated cost and impact on re-sale value.

Hello Colin

Once you are a resident you can not drive a UK plated car in Spain so that's the same as I,ve stated, can't bring van over to Spain and we too have Spanish car in Spain so it's only used for the journeys. If caught your vehicle can be impounded along with hefty fine. Yes your UK car can stay in Uk insured by Spanish insurer but never brought to Spain.

As to GP, s, NHS is residency based so you may not stay on a UK GP, s list once becoming a resident. You are entitled to emergency use only. If you are below pension age therefore private health insurance needed you need to check you can utilise it also in Uk and not just for Spain and check time limits out of country too. There are meant trip hazards along the way if you do not do your research fully and of course if you have a house to sell in Uk beware CGT to Spain.

Pauline
