Hi,

We are a family of three (my daughter soon to be 16) and hoping to move to Denia area possibly April 2023 but will be starting to visit Costa Blanca area with the intention of looking for a place towards the end of next year.  Just wondering if the area has plenty to offer teenagers or if it is more a retirement place?  My husband and I are in our early 50s and have always wanted to experience life with a more outdoors culture/environment and want somewhere that will be fulfilling enough for our daughter.  Any advice would be much appreciated.  She is looking forward to it also but we just worry if it’s the right thing to do for her.

Thank you.

We live 15km inland from Denia, have been here 3 years and have made friends with a number of British expats who have been here for variou lengths of time and who have teenage children. Would be happy to introduce you to them so you could compare notes the next time you visit.

Thank you for your reply.  That would be great!  We probably won’t be travelling there until next year as we plan to come out for a month at a time to try out different areas and also because my daughter will be finished her Highers. There are a lot of areas that we quite like the look of but we understand that until you’ve visited a place you can’t really tell. It would be good to talk to someone who has teenagers in the Costa Blanca area as we do have a lot of queries/concerns but are also quite set on moving.

Any contacts would be appreciated🙂

Thank you

Many people still use the UK to make their money and then move to Spain or other countries to spend it. I'd be a little worried moving out before your daughter has finished her education and potentially moved into work. We have UK friends who live in Ibiza and both their children have left the island to live and work in the UK because of a lack of work in Spain for the young. The children now live with family in the UK despite one of them being Spanish born and the other moving to Spain when about 5.

Thank you for your reply... this is the main concern for us.  Having previously toiled with moving over a few years ago and with the timing not being right for any of us, we are now in a position to move for a simpler and hopefully more relaxing lifestyle for all of us but have now also become more aware of the challenges for youngsters looking for careers/jobs especially in these parts of Spain.

Whilst we are so ready to leave the UK, we don’t want to jeopardize our daughter’s future.

Many more family discussions required🤔

Thank you so much, we really appreciate your advice.🙂

Thank you.

The last thing I want to do is rain on your parade. As you say there might be workarounds. We delayed our move here until our daughter was ready to move out of the family home and was relatively settled into work. It meant us spending quite a bit to fund the delay given we weren't working but it was worth it for us :)

No, I appreciate your honesty and as I said earlier, it’s really the main reason that we haven’t moved sooner.  May I ask if your daughter did eventually move over with you or is she still in the UK?

Can I ask if you all have a UK or EU passport?

Have you looked into the legalities and  requirements for living permanently in Spain such as visas, NIE, and residence formalities?

She lives in the UK - she moved out of the family home 2 months before we sold it. She rents a place with a friend and we have family in the area still if she needs that kind of help. She is however out with us at the moment for a week - first time in a year we've seen her where it hasn't been on whatsapp.

She was 22 when she left home and her flying the nest has been broadly positive apart from not being able to visit here.

As TEBO says above there is much to look into since we left the EU and that includes types of visa - typically the new non lucrative visa doesn't come with an ability to work here as far as I know but you can find out more if you contact the Spanish consulates in the UK - there are quite a few threads on the post Brexit long term visas.

Good luck :)

Hi, we have UK passports and yes, my husband has been looking into this in depth over the last year or so.
