Warning

I would like to share my story with the members of the group to avoid similar situations in the future, and to warn everyone to keep their properties and belongings safe.

I have learned that there is a couple, restaurant owners in Denia, who has recently taken possession of one of their late guests apartment, and all his belongings.

My friend who was the unnamed guest had moved to Spain 3 years ago. He lived alone, he was a man for himself, but he loved Denia and he discovered the place every day. He worked for more than 50 years and secured a solid, comfortable existence for the rest of his life.

On his walks he found a restaurant on Calle Loreto, where he was warmly welcomed and in a short period of time, the restaurant had become his favourite place to go for a drink or a meal. He lived the happy life of a retired expat. Two years ago he fell ill, and the illness took him too soon, he passed away this February. He could not enjoy his golden years.

This couple, (who have moved to Spain a few years ago from the US), took the time and effort to learn about his situation, to abuse the, so called `friendship`. They found out, he had no heir, nobody to claim for his inheritance. They saw the opportunity of their lifetime and made the decision to break in my friends apartment and occupy it. They have a lawyer who is playing with them and actually advised them to make the move, as in Spain you can do such a thing without legal consequences.

I made my report to the police, and keep my hopes up to do justice and stop these people succeeding their plan to steal and rob a person who is dead and as they said to me ` he is not coming back`.

There are no words of my disappointment that this can happen in Europe in 2021. There are no words to express how I feel knowing that there are people with such evil intensions.

I told my story to make everyone aware, and ask to be very careful who they trust. There are people who are fishing for expats goods and wealth, using their vulnerability of living in a foreign country and only wishing to enjoy their golden years. If these people had done it once they might do it again with another deceived person.

I read a similar story to this recently on here.

A woman had moved into an unrelated elderly neighbours house on the event of her supposed death, then changed the locks all the normal stuff.

Only when the elderly neighbour was discharged from hospital after her operation did the woman (squatter) leave the property or face some kind of public lynching.

We hear that the Spanish property laws are skewed in favour of squatters but not in all cases it seems, and common sense might sometimes prevail.

I can't see why an inheritance without an heir or will wouldn't simply revert to the state?

Hi, it does revert to the state, but that takes months or sometimes years. These people thought they can move in and use someone property and all his belongings. I know it's a shocking story.

Would you know the value of his property and assets, with his full name, date and place of birth, as there are companies in the UK, assuming that he was British that trace long lost relatives who may be entitled to make a claim of inheritance.

Many thanks to the original poster for taking the time to share this. Laws should protect the innocent victims, not the wrong-doers. Sorry you have lost a friend.

Yes I read that article and it contradicted other news reports, where as officials have difficulties in eviction, but this recent article states whether it’s a permanent home or holiday home all should enjoy the same legal protection as a primary residence, all intruders are liable to be charged with breaking and entering under article 202 of the penal code and officials can evict and if necessary make arrests without a court order.

Thank you for all the sympathy. I am working on the legal way to sort out everything. It is just so outrageous that some people are able to move in and live between someone elses things. Like it was always theirs. No moral, no humanity!

My mission is now to stop them with all my power, I will try!
