There are a few where we live inland, but they're in the minority compared to wasps and bees. I've had plenty of wasp stings over the years, but the hornets seem to me to be less aggressive, and I've never had a sting from one, although I often get one looking around my workshop when I've got the doors open. Interesting what you say about chlorine - I normally apply lemon juice or vinegar to a wasp sting, then an ice cube for a few minutes, then a dab of anti-histamine cream. The hornets all look the same to me, but there are several types of wasps, of which the one I call long-legged is the worst. I've been told by a Spanish friend to avoid aggravating bees, because Spanish bee stings are apparently much worse than UK ones.
