If looking for a Freesat specific model - you are best to buy from the UK, such as Amazon. The issue in Spain, is whilst we or others can supply satellite receivers, Freesat is specific to the UK, not officially supplied or warranty in Spain - so anyone offers you one here, is simply buying it themselves from Amazon or similar and selling to you! 

The Freesat systems will only work with UK TV (Freesat epg) and although there may be a workaround to get both dishes plumbed into the Freesat box, it means you won't be able to use it properly in the Freesat mode. In English, use a generic free to air receiver for the French TV and Freesat if you want the recording, simplicity and program guide of the UK type boxes.   Other options are available which offer all the content - French & English, via IPTV, which whilst you can record, you don't need to as have the catch-up type services (certainly on English).

Thanks Paul , will have a look at the website; quite a lot of information on it!.  And I thought things would be simpler with Freesat!! We were planning on buying a 'Spanish' tv with tdt so that we'd actually get to learn some Spanish!.  We bought a skybox in Ireland a few years ago, and then realised that it wouldn't work in France (where we live) and where we bought our 'original' old skybox...probably because 'old' skybox is English and 'new' one was 'Irish'...and probably not 'unlocked'.... (despite the assurances from the company in Dublin...).... I read somewhere that a sky box could be used to watch Freesat channels but then you wouldn't be able to record stuff......  Thanks for the info will read all the stuff on the website! Caroline

you can use your skybox to receive free to air or freesat - you just can't record with a Sky box, without an active Sky card in it - Freesat hardware does not have this restriction.

Thanks - as we won't be permanently there I'm wondering whether the skybox would be enough.... it's just sitting in a box at the moment as of course it doesn't work in the 'old' machine.. Thanks for your help... I'll contact your website when I've discussed this with my hubby!  We can get the freesat boxes here in Paris... I'm guessing they're still ok... when we bought the sky box (a long time ago), they'd ordered them from the UK...so they were 'set' for the UK... thanks once again... will get back to you once we've figured out what we're going to do.

We just moved to a house with sat dish. Started by looking for free sat box , then realised we probably needed new tv so got one with free sat tuner in the tv so no need for a box, just a thought!

Thanks for the advice... did you buy your tv in Spain?  As we were planning on buying one there to have the TDT (which is the Spanish channels)...and from what Paul had recently told me, it's only UK tvs that work with freesat...

I think that’s maybe true, yes we bought ours at Conforama at La Zenia Boulevard, an LG tv 49 inch around the 400 euros mark. Our freesat picks up some main uk progs and many others. We now have internet and a gadget to pick up many more channels. 

Thanks that's very interesting... from my vague geography of Alicante, I think La Zenia is miles away from where we live... we were planning on buying a tv at Alcampo... a bit closer...but interesting to know - will have a look as I think there may be a conforama a bit closer to us.. thanks for the info..
