Hi there, I'm just wondering whether anyone can recommend a good butcher (for beef) in El Campello or San Juan. We're coming over during the holiday period and would like to get some nice filet of beef to cook at home...thanks for any advice

I’m not from your area, but most butchers are similar quality here. You should look for Galician beef, as I understand that this is considered to be the best. However, my experience is that none of the beef here, regardless of cost or vendor, has the same flavour as beef in UK. I have been told that this is because it is not hung like British beef and is slaughtered at a younger age.

Thanks - yes that's what the French have been telling me too... that in Spain meat is considered 'hung' after 2 weeks or something!!  It tastes good in restaurantes but can't exactly be eating out every day!!

Okido thanks will have a look. One of our Spanish neighbours recommended some restaurant in Alicante that only serves Basque beef...which they consider the best...I guess every region is saying there's is...though I'd say that Galicia and Basque region have enough rain to feed the cows!!

Galicia is really the centre of the cattle and dairy country- the large commercial dairies are based there and most butchers proudly label the beef as ‘Gallego’ or ‘Galicia’.

We spent what we considered to be a huge amount of money on a much vaunted special Galician ‘chuleton’ - basically huge T bone type steak cut sold in thick lumps here - and were disappointed. It really had little flavour compared to Frech or UK beef.

Thanks - will have to think of something else then!! I know the French mentioned that one Lidl had some good quality beef...but have no idea which shop or where it was!  I could ask my Spanish neighbours I suppose...though it's all relative.... although we have a French-Spanish couple next door so maybe he's got some good tips/clues...if I find anyone I'll let you all know!!
