Hi

We were recently over in El Campello in order to sign for our new apartment.

We had placed an order for furniture at Canforama in San Juan so on route from Alicante airport we stopped off in our hire car to check delivery was still on.

On return to our hire care someone had broken in and stole both our cases and ruck sacks filled with valuable items we brought from the Uk

We know in hind sight we should not have left the car but thought we would be fine in a busy car park (naive)

£2500 worth of items went no cameras and police just said it happens all the time the target of hire cars

Just be mindful of leaving items in your car don’t make our mistake

Cheers

Andy

Years ago in Segovia we were checking into an hotel in a perfectly good residential area, just on the outskirts of the town, within walking distance. during the general kerfuffle of taking luggage in and out of the car and across the road (unfortunately no immediate parking outside), a process which took all of 10 minutes, the car quarter light was smashed and A’s expensive camera stolen together with various other items. NO, they weren’t in the boot because of what was happening at the time; so, unfortunately, you simply cannot be too careful

Unfortunately owing to the fact that the hire vehicle was a fiat panda the space was not large enough to accommodate the luggage so some was on the back seat

It was a sharp welcome to Spain’s hospitality 😔

I've read that it's a good idea to remove any obvious sign that the car is rented I.e rental company stickers. I always do this and the small cars I hire look pretty unremarkable in the large Conforama or Carrefour car parks.

If we have to rent or visiting friends and relatives we tell them the same, remove rental company stickers.

I couldn’t get them all in the boot owing to the size of the vehicle

I feel like it was my fault but all I was  guilty of is going in a shop

It isn’t just hire cars that get done like this.   Back in 2004 my late husband and I were driving down to the Province of Almeria in our own car.   At around 2 p.m. on a sunny afternoon in January we stopped in a busy car park just outside Barcelona in order to have a comfort break. We were only away from the car for about 15 minutes but when we returned the driver’s door lock had been broken and a lot of things taken.   Luckily I had our passports and holiday paperwork with me.
