Hello,

My husband and I just moved to El Campello from the U.S., and for the first time in our lives we don't own a car- (we hope to keep it that way). We are considering buying electric bikes or scooters so that we explore the area a little more easily.  I am perplexed by the array of options of bikes and scooters so I hope to hear from folks who have some experience with either of these.  I am looking for something with a seat and my husband is open to standing or sitting. Thanks, we really appreciate any and all feedback!

Here are some of my questions: 1. Which is more versatile? 2.Is it possible/advisable to buy a used one? 3. Are there any quality ones that don't cost a fortune? 4. What features are important? 5. Are there brands/ local dealerships you can recommend? 6. Is it possible to travel on trains, trams, or buses with it, ( how difficult is it?)? 7. what about ordering it online? Is the weather here in the winter still conducive to riding?

Hello Denise,

Welcome to Spain and this forum.  My husband and I live part time in a suburb of Alicante City.   A huge plus in this area is the great variety of public transport which we use all the time.  We chose not to drive here either.😎

Yes, we too are interested in acquiring electric bikes or scooters.  We have similar questions to yours about them.

Just to say we have not seen any of these on the public transport.  Not on trains, trams, or buses.  🤷🏻‍♀️ Nor do we see where people leave them on entering Malls or shops.   Where do they go?? 😃 House to house only?

For us winter weather is usually terrific.  No ice or snow!  Road surfaces usually are good.  Mostly blue skies and bright during the day.   Strong winds at times.  Some stormy, rainy days!!

Kind Regards

Good luck in your new home.

Maria

Maria,

Thank you so much for your kind reply.  Hopefully we will both learn something that will help us in deciding on our future transportation. I did see a teenager and his dad fold up an electric bike quickly and stick it in a canvas bag before entering the tram. The bagged bike was about the size of a medium suitcase.  I have to admit I was pretty impressed.  The same day on our stroll through steamy Alicante, I witness a grown women zip by fast on a little thing with a seat and no pedals. It was the size of a five year old's first bike, and at first it looked kind of ridiculous to me, but then I grew quite envious as I watched her disappear in seconds with her long hair whipping behind her. I think I want both of those vehicles, but of course I will only get one electric ride. The most common thing I've seen are the stand up scooters, and I think I might last about 2 minutes on one before  I'd lose my balance and crash.

We have been in El Campello for 2 weeks now, we have our residency card coming in the mail, we have our presence noted in our town ( the padron), we have a Spanish bank account, andfound a great apartment on the beach. But after 3 stormy days and too many Netflix movies I am getting cabin fever and can't wait to buy an escape vehicle. I stopped by a rental place and learned you can rent a standard  bike with an electric for about $50 E, for 2 weeks, which seems pretty reasonable. Once the weather settles down some I might give that a try.

Anyway, I do hope folks with ebike or escooter  tales will share their electric wisdom.

Thanks! Denise

Hi Denise,

Thanks for the information about the rentals.  You’ve given me an idea.

My friend lives in El Campello.  She recommends La Grana Restaurant, overlooks the water. We enjoyed a nice seafood Paella there.

Also have you tried a site called Internations.org?  It’s a worldwide forum and there are organized group activities eg dinners, tennis, coffee mornings, and beach parties etc.  We enjoyed a lovely coffee morning with a group in July in Alicante.  We met people from England, USA, Russia, France, Netherlands, Ukraine and Spain.  We were the Irish couple ☘️ We exchanged contact details with a few and look forward to theatre outings etc...

The next coffee morning will meet end of September.  Please look at the site and see if you’d be interested.   It’s free to browse.  Then various memberships bring privileges eg.  5€ month you get to attend events free.

Regards

Maria

For those who do not know of the N332 site, it is run in collaboration with officers of the Guardia Civil, whose Trafico Department deal with anything to do with driving in Spain, for English speaking people and has an English version of the Spanish equivalent of the Highway Code.

Can also recommend la Grana restaurant.. great location perhaps not the cheapest restaurant in the area (unless you go for the menus) but staff very friendly and you just look out onto the sea.
