Our SIP cards expire this month as I'm sure many other peoples may do. Any advice on how we can renew them for our prescriptions. We have been told the health centre is only for emergencies at the moment (which we completely agree with)

SIP cards are not an emergency, I agree, unless you are unable to get your medication in which case they might consider it. A local friend of mine, for whom I translate, was in a situation where she did not have the SIP card but they made an exception and issued her with one. Given that it is just a renewal in your case, they might just do it if you explain why. Worth asking

We are resident since March last year, having owned a house here for 16 years. This year we submit our taxes and become fiscal resident. We are not of retirement age. We have temporary SIP's. Maybe that changes when we become fiscal residents ?

Hi,

I'm not sure what you've said makes sense - if you're not retirement age, were you issued a temporary SIP card before you became residents?

In order to qualify for a permanent SIP card, you would need to be of pensionable age or qualify by way of another UK Exportable Benefit, such as Disability Living Allowance, in order to obtain a Form S1.  You would have needed to prove healthcare rights for your residency application, but as you say you're not pensioners, presumably you had to buy private health insurance?

As a resident, you only become eligible for a permanent SIP card once you reach pensionable age, or if you have an Exportable Benefit.

Kind regards,

Kim

We are both 56 years of age (early retirement) so not of state retirement age. We are resident since January 2019 and moved permanently in March 2019. This year we become fiscal residents (after full 12 months residency). We have temporary SIP cards issued when we registered with our health centre last year. This entitles us to our prescriptions etc, issued for 12 months. Our SIP cards expire this month and need renewing.

Yes we had to purchase private health care. As fiscal residents we will now be able to contribute into the Spanish health system.

Well...we have a SIP card. 3 in fact. 1 for me, my wife and our son who is living with us at the moment.

We intend to use the convenio especial

Hi,

You say you've owned a property here prior to becoming residents, so I'm guessing that your SIPs are the temporary, 6-month duration versions, that some health centres used to issue for their administrative convenience.  Since Brexit, I doubt very much that your temporary SIPs would be renewed, even if your health centre was open for non-urgent assistance.  So you'll need to pay for your prescriptions - if you take a previous 'script or the packaging to your local pharmacy, they'll be able to tell you whether the medication is available over the counter.

Once you have been resident for 1 year, you can apply to join the Convenio Especial.

Kind regards,

Kim

You are correct Kim. We have been here now over 12 months and have just submitted our tax returns. Brexit transition period so far is to the end of the year. We do pay for our prescriptions nut the SIP card allows a reduced cost. Our son suffers from Clinical Depression. None of his medication is available over the counter.

We have had them since relocating here in 2019. Never had a problem. Get reduced prescriptions. Also our son has been resident since Jan 2019 also. Private healthcare does not provide prescriptions. We have to have prescriptions as his medication is only available on prescription.

Just going back to one of your comments Kim. Our son has DLA, does that mean he should get an S1 form for a permanent SIP card. Then, how would that apply after the official brexit date ?
