Hi. My name is jo and just recently the sale of my house here in the uk was completed and i was thinking about how much happier i was living abroad years ago, and as i have no family in the uk and my health has limited my daily existence, so the idea of starting a new life in spain has become more than a dream and i have made the decision to move to elche and buy property there that is a lot more for the money than in the uk. However, moving to a new country alone and having no links or contacts is kind of scary, so i would love to chat to others that have made the move, hopefully to gain more insight about the ups and downs of living in elche as an expat and i would really like to know what to expect. I am visiting the area soon so it would be fantastic if i have made a couple of friends here chatting and maybe we could meet up when i go over so i don't feel quite as nervous about being in a place that i have never been to and where i will have nobody there as a crutch. Please i would love to chat. Thanks

Hi Jo, you are very brave I think to uproot yourself and come to a new country.  Before I came I bought a fantastic book that has lots of info about life in Spain and legal requirements- all very easily readable.  It’s called ‘Dreaming of retiring to the Costa Blanca?   By Yvonne Bartholomew.  I recommend it.   Elche is a lovely place and although smallish it has different areas, so please research them before buying. Anyway, we would be happy to meet up and talk about life here and our own trials and tribulations.   How’s your Spanish?!  Best wishes Carrie

Hi carrie. Thank you so much for your reply. You have made me even more determined to make the move to the costa blanca and embark on a new adventure. As it happens, i am flying over to alicante next week and will be viewing quite a few properties, but i am going to be alone for the time there, so it would make my visit a little less lonely if i was able to spend a couple of hours chatting to ppl that can give me some friendly advice. Perhaps you would like to go out for an evening meal one night and we can have a chat over some lovely spanish food. I will be staying in santa pola, but i could travel to somewhere mord convenient. I have had some health issues in recent years, so primarily this move is to get my body and mind in better shape, but i am hoping to make enough income from rental prospects. I don't thonk i can give you my details here, so am not sure how this will work, but if you would like to meet up sometime next week then please reply and we can go from there. Kind regards, jo

Hi Brian

Don't mean to be rude butting in but my husband and I were looking at Elche wondered if you could shed some light on the other areas, we looked at Gran Alacant but figured we could get more for our money in Elche as it would just be a holiday home to start with but would hope to make it permanent when our kids are older.

Hi Suzy,

I just saw your message. It really depends what you are looking for. Gran Alacant and La Marina have bigger expat communities than other places around Elche and as a result prices are usually higher. Do you want to be immersed in Spanish life or somewhere more touristy?

Hello Brian,

I read the advice you offered to someone about looking into Torreveijo rather than Elche. Since you have extensive experience with the area, can you help me out how to decide weighing to move to Benidorm or Torreviejo. At the moment, my sister & I are in Alicante City for a week and have seen either of those two cities. The goal is to retire & move in the next 12 months or less from the United States with our pets, but two households. (both early retired & healthy & active) We don't speak any Spanish yet, but are working on it. - We only have a few days left and want to visit both places, but with some better solid though behind it.

Any information is very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Vonnie

Hello. my name is Eva and I am currently contemplating buying a property in Elche as soon as I sell my flat in Denia. I would love to look forward to meeting people who are already there. Have not decided where to buy in Elche because it is all so lovely and the prices are fair plus my husband speaks no Spanish at all so English speaking people living nearby is very important. We are in our mid seventies so our working days are over. Freedom is wonderful and meeting like minded people is big part of the dream.
