Hello All, I have all but completed the the various requirements to retire in Denia but have hit on a snag which I can't see a way around. The Spanish authorities require I pass their driving test. I've been working hard on the theory and feel confident that I'll pass. The practical l understand is conducted in Spanish so I don't stand a chance of success. Has anyone any advice to give which might lift my spirits or is it the death of a dream?

"The test has two parts: a written theory test (see some test questions) as well as a practical test. Both are usually taken in Spanish although you can take a translator with you and in some areas of Spain there are English-speaking examiners."

This is from https://www.expatica.com/es/living/transportation/spanish-driving-license-107661/

We are all hoping that agreements will be reached whereby Brits can exchange their licence in a relatively straightforward procedure as we did pre-Brexit and an announcement is due some time between now and the end of February.

Hold on to that dream.

Thank you for your encouraging response. I had no idea that you could take along a translator when taking the practical driving test. Have sold my house here in the UK and was out house hunting today as a lovely villa without personal transport had little appeal.

For the driving test it is in 3 parts not two as people describe.  Part 1 is medical, which is valid for 90 days.  Part 2 is theory which can be taken in english.  You get two attempts per fee.  You are allowed to get 4 wrong out of 30.  The questions are tricky so ensure you read them properly and do not base your answer on uk as it is slightly different in spain.  Part 3 is practical, it is best to find a test centre that allows you to take a translator(not all allow it).

Hopefully uk exert their influence and resolve the situation. If they do all that is required is part 1 to exchange the uk licence for a spanish one.  UK has agreements with all of EU countries except Spain and Italy.

Hi Douglas,

First, than you for taking the time to give me some advice. Having completed numerous test questions I agree that some questions need to be read carefully. The sometimes cumbersome use of English can be misleading at first but with time you become familiar with it.

I wasn't aware that some test centres prohibited the presence of a translator...... will endeavour to find one that does.

The best hope was expressed in your final paragraph - that the UK and Spain come to a reciprocal deal over licencing drivers......fingers crossed on that one.

Again thank you,

Tony

I wouldn't hold your breath for an agreement and expatica dent their  credibility by saying if your licence is not in Spanish then you must carry an IDP.

It's also highly misleading (or simply sloppy) for them intimate that you can take a translator with you for the theory test which obviously you cannot.

You are correct you cannot take a translator for the THEORY test!,  I never implied that you could, it is acceptable at some driving test centres to take a translator with you for the PRACTICAL Test.

Good luck with taking a test.My wife said she would have to give up driving if she had to take a test and I thought I’d have to find a Spanish ringer to take one for me!Luckily we swapped our UK licences courtesy of the Withdrawal Agreement.

There are some driving schools that do the practical test in English.

You have to enquire.

La Zenia have 3 schools that do everything in English.

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. Thanks for this "new" insight into the problem...... I'll certainly look into it. Just got my papers back from the foreign office, apostilled as required......using lawyers both here in the UK and in Barcelona to help facilitate the residency process......cost to date £1120.....sunshine doesn't come cheap!
