Hi,

Would like some advice. We have a real problem with the house opposite ours where the Spanish lady has several ferral cats in her property. At one time we counted at least 8 or 9 cats, but believe now there are slightly less. The smell is absalutly disgusting, can't tell you how bad it is... we have complained to the ayuntamiento several times, who have told us they are well, aware of this particular house but still we have seen no improvement . The guy upstairs is feeding the cats, which is making the matter much worse... has anyone any advice as to what we can do? These cats are in such a poor state it is so sad to see them,  one is blind the others being  sick everywhere, not sure what is happening to the new kittens that we constantly  here screeching. . Any ideas please????

There is little or nothing you can do about it. If any of those or other cats invade your property you can do with them whatever you consider useful.See it positive: the more cats, the less mice and rats.

It may be an idea to contact your nearest animal sanctuary; for a start they have specialised cat trap cages that can capture the animals without hurting them, although it can take some time. They will then look after them and in some areas the council has a policy of neutering them.

At least contact one of them and discuss the situation with them - if they are overwhelmed themselves they may have some advice - most of them are run either by British ex-pats and if another nationality they will usually speak English.

You must take care of our furry friends!   I read recently of the dog which ate chewing gum and died.  That is because the sweetener in gum, which is harmless to humans, is fatal to dogs and cats.  The ingredient is XYLOTIL which can be bought over the internet from Amazon and many other suppliers so beware because it is in many domestic products!  If it gets mixed up with your scraps of animal food it will kill!

Chew on that....

Richard, I hope you are not suggesting to poison them????

Neutering is the answer, not killing.  People complain about cats but don’t want to pay for castrations.

I don’t think he’s actually suggesting killing them, Josephine. And you are quite right, neutering is the answer. The difficulty is the sheer number of feral cats and the actual logistical difficulties of catching them in order to do this.

Hi Josephine

Do you always think the worst of people?   You obviously have a sick mind to think such a thing when all I did was to give a warning about a freely available and used substance.

Get a life before you accuse others.

Richard, I apologize if I misunderstood your post. I do not have a sick mind, but I have encountered so many people in my area who just want to poison cats.  I have three feral cats living in my garden and have trapped several more in my urbanization and had them neutered.  I have been threatened with police for feeding them.  I don’t trust anyone where feral cats are concerned.

So again my apologies.
