Hi everyone,

We went to Alicante this morning to submit our EX-23 applications - all went well and we have to return to collect our TIE cards in 3 weeks' time.

For anyone else planning to do it on their own, I thought it may be helpful to describe our experience.  I know others, helpfully, had previouly given their feedback, but I couldn't find it.

We had 9am appointments at the Foreigners' office: Ebanisteria 4-6, Alicante 03071.

We arrived at 8.20am and there was plenty of roadside parking at that time.  We were first in the queue when security unlocked the gate and said the office would be open at 9am.  In fact, he returned at 8.45am, checked our appointment confirmations and told us to go in. On entry, you immediately go through a security scanner, similar to airports.  Then you turn left, help yourself to the wall-mounted sanitizer in front of you, then continue to the far left corner, where the ticket machine is located - select Cita Previa, then the box below it and you'll be prompted to enter your NIE number.  A pop-up box confirms your details and appointment time, and once you've confirmed it's you, the machine prints your numbered ticket.

The waiting room is behind you, with green plastic seats - walk down there and take a seat until your ticket number appears on the TV screen, along with the Mesa (table) number.  Swaps are done in 'Sala 3', so take the entrance door, marked by arrows on the floor, into Sala 3 where the individual desks are numbered (there were 6 operating this morning).  The staff are screened behind perspex shields and the chair you sit on is socially distanced with tape marking the position on the floor - so don't do what my husband did and pulled the chair up closer to the desk!  After the usual pleasantries, I was asked for my passport, then my residency certificate, my photo and then the rest of my documents.  I was asked to sign the card on which my photo had been mounted and had my fingerprints electronically scanned.  I was given a receipt with instructions to collect the card in 3 weeks' time from the other Foreigners' office at Calle Campos de Mirra, 6, Alicante.

We were in and out in 15 minutes.

When you go to collect your TIE, it's important that you check the wording on the card while you're there, as there have been errors with people being issued the wrong card.  You should see the words:

Reverso: ARTÍCULO 50 TUE

(on the back: Article 50 TUE)

Observaciones: EMITIDO BAJO ART. 18.4 ACUERDO RETIRADA

(observations: issued under Art. 18.4 Withdrawal Agreement)

Kind regards,

Kim

Where it occurs the error is on the front not the back.

Some (many/most?) are saying "Residence card of a family member of a Union Citizen" which is wrong of you are a British citizen applying in your own right.

I'm sure we'll learn in the fullness of time what if anything is to be done about the mistake but there is nothing to be done about it on the day.

In any case "EMITIDO BAJO ART. 18.4 ACUERDO RETIRADA", and for those with their 5 years in "Permanente", are the important bits

I was told to collect my tie card in 3 weeks, but did not attend last Friday, instead went this Tuesday, I then was informed the card had not arrived and would be there the next day = this Wednesday!  So that meant another 2 hour round trip! When I finally picked the card up it had the wrong information! Re a family member of a eu citizen! I was absolutely gobsmacked after all the trials, tribulations, effort and time I had put in, I am now waiting for information on how to correct this and really and true fully fed up, I have been told it was a computer error and hopefully the Spanish authorities are going to replace these faulty cards, there supposedly thousands reported to the uk consulates in Spain and awaiting reply! I have also read that anyone applying after mid September should be ok.

Hi Peter,

I'm so sorry to hear that, especially when you've given us so much helpful feedback, how frustrating!

I've heard similar information to you and that the error should have been corrected for anyone applying after 11 September - so I will have my fingers crossed for the next 3 (4?  5?) weeks!  Personally, I'm not convinced by the "computer error" explanation, but perhaps we'll find out in the fullness of time.

Kind regards,

Kim

"Personally, I'm not convinced by the "computer error" explanation", including 'human error' what would your explanation be and why?

Judging by the number of cards they had in their box, which looked to be many hundreds and may have only been one box of many, I would guess the logical thing to do would be to carry on issuing those but make sure that the next and future batches were correct then when the rush was over take whatever steps are deemed necessary to replace the faulty ones.

Depending on how the mistake was allowed to take place It's entirely possible that they may not know exactly who's affected so it may be a case of mass mail shot or perhaps a web site where those affected can report the problem.

As annoying as it is though I don't think it's anything to be getting too worried about and as far as I can find out the only potential consequence would be for someone with the mistake on a permanent card.

I say potential because for someone who is in fact a family member (which can really only apply to a non EU spouse or children) even as a permanent resident their permitted time out of the country remains at 6 months as opposed to 5 years for a everyone else.

As said, I am absolutely gutted, It’s been a uphill struggle since my first application in March of this year. I was really surprised that I had to inform getlegalinspain of my findings, but they already knew of the problem people were having incorrect cards, but Had not let me know until I actually collected my card in hand and said not to worry, but could not give me any updates! Really disappointed about that. I will be contacting Uma on this matter once I have calmed down, as I am in a can’t be bothered mood. I spoke to another person who had collected her card and she knew nothing about the situation, her card was wrong. So she went back inside, only to be shrugged off, she to was devastated, I informed her of one or two websites to look at, especially Facebook brits in Spain set the by the uk government in Spain. Well I have not had a alcoholic drink for 4 years, but just maybe over the weekend I might be tempted, have a good weekend everyone and stay safe and healthy.

Stick with a shandy, Peter, it doesn't sound like your head can cope with any more headaches.  I wonder if my glass of fizz was a bit premature too..... 🤔

Take care,

Kim

Sorry about my rant! But forget to mention on the day my card was not available, another couple were told to come back in 2 weeks, making their wait 5 weeks! But remember we were new applications and you’re updating from old style to new card, I mean what can go wrong! Thank you for your kind message, much appreciated, Peter.

Hi shellybelly,

My guide was in the "Spain Tips and Guides" section, but I can't find it.  I've asked Alex whether he can retrieve it - it needs updating, as applications are now made at the same office where you go to collect your TIE - and I also want to check that the embedded links are still correct.  I'll update you when I hear back from Alex.

Kind regards,

Kim
