Hi to all, I have lived in Spain for 18 years but further inland. I want to move closer to the coast and have been looking at Formentera as an option. Question is...is it the place for me?

I am a widow. I enjoy walking and I do a lot of craft work as well. I am a very sociable person, had my own small business (tea shop) here in Spain for 5 years. I speak enough Spanish to get by ok.

So is there much of an expat community there? I have been to Quesada before but that is a bit too much for me,, I prefer semi rural. Any walking groups in the area? I have volunteered in the past with chairty groups, are there any such groups in the area?

Just trying to get a "feel" for the area. Planning a trip down today in fact, just to have a proper look about.

Any feedback...most welcome.

Do call into the plaza del Ayuntamiento during your visit. The kiosk, Tio de Pere, is a good place to get chatting to people and get their views.

Thanks for that, in the end I couldn't get there yesterday...family thing to sort. I hope to be down before Christmas and will definitely check it out

Hi BarbaraR,

I think you'd like the village, especially as you speak Spanish.  Our Ayuntamiento is proactive in helping foreigners integrate, with a section on their website and a regularly updated Facebook page detailing, amongst other things, services and events for its residents.  The Cultural Centre runs regular activities for residents, such as exercise classes for all ages, and today there was a Spanish Christmas show cooking demonstration.

https://www.formenteradelsegura.es/servicios/atencion-al-ciudadano-extranjero/

There are local shops, including a supermarket in the village centre, a Caja Rural bank branch and a Sabadell bank ATM.  Several Spanish bars and restaurants, and a couple of English ones as well.  The Segura river runs through the village, so plenty of opportunities for walking along the banks in either direction.  The area of Los Palacios is also part of Formentera del Segura, although it's as close to Rojales and Benimar/Benijofar as it is to Formentera Village centre.  We have a limited bus service which serves the village, with about 4 buses a day on a route between Orihuela and Guardamar del Segura, but if that's of interest to you, I'd recommend checking the printed timetable at one of the bus stops.

If you have specific queries once you've visited, don't hesitate to ask.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thank you Kim for taking time out to reply. This all sounds very positive. I think it will be New Year before I get there to look about...an elderly friend of mine is having some health problems so I am currently spending a lot of time supporting her.

In the meantime...Merrt Christmas to you and anyone else eading this.

Thanks again

Barbara

Hi, we have a holiday home in Benimar  which isn’t far from Formentera. Formentera is a good base as it really easy to get to the beach by car. Rojales and Benijofar are also nearby so you’ve got a great selection of bars and restaurants.

I’m not sure about walking groups, but it a nice area for walking. There are lovely walks along the river and you can walk through the orange groves to Benimar from Formentera. The mountains aren’t faraway so you do get lovely views. Like you, Quesada wasn’t for us either, but we absolutely love being where we are now and are looking forwards to spending more time there once we eventually retire.
Hope everything goes to plan for you.
