Spain to make facemasks compulsory in outdoor settings again

"Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced this afternoon that face masks will be compulsory in Spain in all outdoor situations once again, even when a distance of 1.5 metres from other people can be maintained.

"Initial reports from the Conference of Presidents being held between Sánchez and the country’s 17 regional leaders suggest that the outdoor face mask requirement is the main Covid-19 restriction to be implemented in Spain this Christmas.

"The announcement comes a day after Spain recorded its highest daily case numbers since the pandemic began, and the fortnightly infection rate is in the “extreme” risk level.

"The Spanish government is set to approve a decree law on Thursday December 23rd for the measure to come into force. When the rule will begin is yet to be confirmed."

EDIT:  This new restriction is confirmed as effective from tomorrow, Friday 24 December.  The detail can be read on Gov.UK here:

I read this on FB earlier but I can't remember if the last time we had to wear masks on dog walks etc whether the bars and restaurants were trading? It would be odd to have to wear masks where there aren't people but be able to remove them where there were.

Merry Christmas.

Hi Lancelot,

I think Spain lifted lockdown on 6th June, but if I remember correctly, bars and restaurants were only allowed to open at lunchtimes - or that may even have been a later relaxation? 🤔

It struck me as an odd restriction to re-impose if they also follow through with extending no entry to all bars and restaurants, and outside terraces, for the unvaccinated, but perhaps they're worried about people going to busy outdoor malls (like Zenia Boulevard) and open-air markets over Christmas and up to Three Kings?

From the updates I've been reading, it sounds as if the demand for tighter restrictions is coming from the regions, more so than central government.

Kind regards,

Kim

Spain's central government has reinstated obligatory wearing of face masks outside with effect from tomorrow, Christmas Eve.  The plan to extend mandatory Covid passes for entry to hospitality venues, including terraces, is a Valencian regional government regulation, but I've yet to see an effective date for that one.  If anyone has seen an official notice, please would you post it.

Many thanks and stay safe 😷

Hi Ronald, the rule you are referring to, was for bars with a license for 50 and over.

There has been an announcement that this is to be extended to all bars and terraces and Kim was asking if anyone has found out the date this is supposed to be starting.

We are all waiting for the Supreme Court to pass and publish the DOGV.

It’s a full time job trying to keep up with all the rule changes.

He can take some sex and travel.in fact, hire several coaches, and get rid of the whole lot of them. Just my humble opinion, of course :)

The new restrictions don’t seem to have filtered through to the populace in general, very few people in this area (Náufragos) are wearing masks when out and about.  In fact, those who are, seem to be local residents.  The people who have arrived for this holiday season, maybe importing the dreaded bug, seem to be maskless and fancy free.
