I have a six year old VW Golf in UK, would it be hard to register it in Spain for use in our holiday home when I get a new car in UK?

Thanks in anticipation of responses

Hi Gerri,

it's hard to do it yourself, although some have done it! You need an importation certificate, an inspection to ensure it complies and to establish the tax band etc etc, then it needs a Spanish MOT known as ITV. (Here in Spain that is a drive through procedure) You also need replacement headlamps and possible re-siting of fog light) I bought my new headlights online and paid my Gestoria to do the importation. It's not cheap but it means I can drive my loved vehicle here. The downside is RHD at some junctions making visibility tricky. However to buy a car similar to your Golf here is ridiculously expensive compared to UK prices. There's a guy on the Costa Blanca south who will do it all for you but I didn't use him as I'm up near Denia and he needed the car overnight, actually my Gestor beat his quote anyway.

One thing you learn quickly when living here is that some people "see ex pats coming..................."

It all depends what you want at your holiday home when you arrive. You could buy a cheap LHD run around but it won't feel like a 6 yo Golf! My old GTI on S plates was one of the best cars I ever owned.............

You will get other replies with alternative views so sit tight. Kind regards, Steve

Hi Gerri,

My friends brought their 12 year Citroen over and changed to Spanish plates. Used until it died in them a couple years ago. If you want I can ask them how they went about it, but it was not a cheap option. They live in Gran Alicant so not too far from Formentera.

Hi Steve -

I'm in the Javea area and need to import / register my UK car.

Could you give an idea of your Gestor's quote and their name / details?

Kind regards, Robert

Hi Steve

Thanks for your response, I appreciate you taking  the time. I checked log book and the car is actually only 5 years with 47,000 miles on it which is young in Golf years. From what you say I will need to seek professional assistance but It will be worth doing 👍🏻 👍🏻

Best wishes
