I arrived on Thursday and Goldcar would not let me hire my car as I only have my British Licence. As I do not have an international licence they said it was illegal. I’m now having a 10 day holiday on the costa Blanca without the car I wanted. Be warned!!!

Hi, I hire cars with no problem on my U.K. licence. I’m coming over in 3 weeks and another hire is booked and straight forward, am I missing something?

Hi

I have hired on many occasions for several years. This was with Goldcar. I only have a paper licence (I’m that old) but it has never been a problem before. As I don’t have an international drivers licence they wanted some kind of paper supplement?! If you have a photo licence I’m sure it will ok but I would advise you check it out!

I'm in El Campello as I write, with a hire car outside the door.  There is no problem with a UK photocard licence; the problem must be with having the old style paper licence.  Time to upgrade!

Edit:

I've just read the link that's posted above:  the reference is for British residents of Spain (which I'm not).  Residents can drive on their existing UK licence until the end of this year but after that they will not be able to renew their UK licence and will need a Spanish licence to drive.

Have a look at this this UK government link for detailed info.

Hi Sean,

The problem is your old-style paper driving licence from the UK, it means you now need an IDP (International Driving Permit) to drive in Spain.  People with a UK photo-card licence do not need an IDP to hire a car in Spain.  The same distinction applies if people are bringing their own car to Spain and, if driving through France to get here, they would need two different IDPs, both of which are available from UK Post offices for around £5 each.

Kind regards,

Kim

I’m grateful for your clear sympathetic response - now I know, that was the problem - I didn’t know that this had changed but only a couple of months ago.at least Goldcar have refunded the costs. I shall upgrade as suggested. I’m enjoying the buses!!
Take care,

Sean

Hi

I know  its bit late for you, but we got one in 2019 due to Brexit, so this year 2021 went to the post office and was told we did not need one but I insisted that we did, so we got one for 12 month , but with the cars so expensive  we didn’t hire as we went for 80 days, but for five pounds each its worth it

I believe the police website N332 has intimated that an International Driving Licence cannot be used as a replacement for a Spanish driving licence. It was ok when we were in the EEC, NOT NOW.  YOU NOW HAVE TO TAKE A SPANISH DRIVING TEST!

ANYONE KNOW OF ANYTHING THAT HAS BEEN POSITIVE FOR US SINCE BREXIT?

SURELY SOMEONE IN THE 52% WHO VOTED FOR IT MUST HAVE SOME GAINS RATHER THAN THE MULTIPLICITY OF LOSSES MOST OF US HAVE EXPERIENCED.
