Hi all,

I have an Irish passport, UK, (NI) drivers licence, and motorhome registered in UK (NI). What sticker do I need? UK for the vehicle or IRE for the driver?

I'm thinking UK sticker because of the vehicle, but because of the existence of The Protocol, following brexit, I tend to lean towards IRE.

Has anyone came across this conundrum before.

I thank you..

Get a N.I. sticker. They come with the European flag on them. They are avaivable on EBay for about 2 pounds.

Illegal as not recognised sticker,if the Spanish Police,National or Guardia on the motorways are feeling stroppy they will pull you over and issue a fine, same as they do for the wrong windows being tinted.

Hi Helgahobby,

As the motorhome is registered in the UK, you must display a UK sticker:

https://www.gov.uk/driving-abroad

"UK stickers and number plates

"From 28 September 2021, you need a UK sticker instead of a GB sticker.

"If your number plate includes the UK identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack), you do not need a UK sticker.

"However, you will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate has any of the following:

  • a GB identifier with the Union flag
  • a Euro symbol
  • a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales
  • numbers and letters only – no flag or identifier

"If you’re in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is on your number plate.

You do not need a UK sticker or number plate to drive in Ireland."

Kind regards,

Kim

It can’t be illegal because N. Ireland is part of the customs union same as Norway. You do not have to pay duty on a car that is registered in N. ireland. I have a N. Ireland sticker on my car and have been stopped and no problem at all.

I'll play devils advocate and have both. One on either side of the number plate.

Thanks for all your replies.

Hi Teilleul,

That's the point - Northern Ireland is NOT a member of the EU Customs Union any longer.  Since Brexit, its trade with Great Britain and its trade with the EU are each now regulated by the EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, the European Union (Future Relationship) Act 2020 and the United Kingdom Internal Market Act 2020.  Hence, the GB and NI stickers are no longer recognised in the EU.

Kind regards,

Kim

The NI sticker is not a recognised identifier, neither are the England,Scotland or Wales stickers, they are stickers a car owner chooses to mount on their vehicle same as " bumper stickers",(passing side, suicide) type things, the only recognised country sticker in EU law is now the " UK" sticker for GB.

Having no bother so far is not the same as being right, the French Police will delight in pulling over British cars in the near future for " Le cash" as they have done in the past.

Thanks for that Stevie, I'm going to have both. Always had the NI sticker only, and never been questioned in over 50,000 mikes continental. Now that the system has changed though, it will be more prudent to have UK there as well.

Thanks for all your input lads, this, I think, has run its course.
