I have a 12" by 8" colour photo of both the Twin Towers and The Statue of Liberty.  I took these photographs with a 35mm Pentax whilst on a visit to New York in January 2000. I had these framed professionally in the UK.

As part of the nest building process, I hung the photographs on the shaded part of my balcony in Formentera Del Segura. As the years have passed, the photographs are showing signs of fading, possibly due to indirect sunlight.

I still have the colour negatives.

My question is:

Can anyone please advise me where I could find an outlet in the surrounding areas where I could have new photos printed?

From a technical point of view can Black and White versions be reproduced from the colour negatives?

I know they can be reproduced in the UK, however I don't wish to bring them down to Spain as part of my hand luggage just in case they become damaged.

Thanking you all in advance.

I’d suggest that you get the negatives scanned to turn them into digital images. This needs to be done at high resolution, and they need to be cleaned carefully beforehand.

Once they have been scanned they will probably need a bit of retouching in Photoshop or similar, and this will give the opportunity to tweak the colour balance, contrast, cropping etc. You’ll also have the opportunity to create B&W versions of the image and this is best done in Photoshop as it gives you the opportunity to control the way in which the red, green and blue channels in the original image are converted into greyscale tones in the final image.

You can then get the digital images printed at any reputable printing place.

The advantage of this approach is that the digital images will last for ever and are easy to back-up and share with others, whereas 35mm negatives are fragile and will deteriorate over time.

If you do get the images printed in the UK then you should bring them over unframed, sandwiched between a couple of pieces of board.

Pete.

Having done what Pete suggested and converted them to digital, I have used the following website to have various sized canvas prints made from photographs.

Thanks Pete and Ray D,

Thanks for the clear, step by step guide relating to digital copying from original negatives, it makes perfect sense. I'm 99% technophobic, perhaps I'll get round to doing this at some stage in the future..

Incidentally, I've just looked at the reverse side of the negatives and it looks like, as you hinted, they are slightly damaged by what looks like faint water marks. I don't wish to try and clean them myself.

In the meantime, I appreciate that any reputable printing place should be able to manage what I'm looking for.

This brings me to the original question, which was, Can anyone please advise me where I could find an outlet in the surrounding areas where I could have new photos printed? On reflection I should have asked if anyone could recommend a professional photographer in the Costa Blanca area, who could make a copy for me.

As you can appreciate, sometimes when something is put in writing, it occasionally doesn't translate well and can come across as being ungrateful.

This response is meant as a genuine thank you to you both for your speedy responses.

Thanks again.

There was a person who was a photographer who advertised on one of the local Facebook groups as doing restoration/retouching of old photos.

I can't find any of these adverts now, but I have a feeling that the same person may be chairman of the Torrevieja Digital Camera Club (but I could be wrong about this).

Either way, the TDCS may be a good starting point for recommendations:

I'd be happy to scan/retouch your negatives myself, but my scanner and associated computer are in the UK. I'll be out in Spain for around 5 weeks from next Saturday, but it's not clear from your post whether you (and your negatives) are in the UK or Spain.

I'm a former professional photographer and now just a keen amateur (but not a technophobe).

Hi,

When I first moved to Spain, I did a photography course with David Stokes, a professional photography who lives in Rojales (La Marquesa) and also runs a photography club in Los Montesinos.  I know he has the technology here in Spain to do what Pete has described, so it may be worth you dropping David an email:

[email protected]

Kind regards,

Kim

Yes, David Stokes is the person I was thinking about earlier.
