Might be a silly question .. so we want to retire maybe Jan/ Feb 2022 move to Spain ,We rent a flat in London but will have a lump sum when I retire  So will have enough to purchase a nice villa etc

Anyways .. how did you manage this. .. for example for me .. I might retire early 2022 so I guess I need somewhere to rent in the area we’re interested in but guess need to make a few trips there and back to rent somewhere , so ship all my stuff to a self storage then rent in a furnished flat until we find our home ?

Any suggestions other than this ??

Hi David,

We identified a property, after 4 viewing trips, that we wanted to buy before moving over to Spain and were going through the purchase process, but we hadn't actually completed, so stayed with friends for almost a month.  We lived in Surrey and used a company called Coles & Sons Transport, Thorpe Drive, Banbury, Oxfordshire OX16 4UZ, Tel: 01295 275074.  A great, family-run company and fantastic service.  They were the cheapest of the 3 quotes I got and half the price of the dearest quote received.  Their price included up to 3 months' storage.

If you want to rent first (very sensible, given the expense of purchase tax in Spain and how long it takes to sell here if you get it wrong), you're probably looking at a minimum of 6 months?  So it may be worth getting a quote from a company like Coles and comparing it to the cost of self-storage, plus transport for transferring from your UK rental to the storage facility.

I expect there may be other options - it depends on how much stuff you have to move.

Kind regards,

Kim

I can't help with your questions, but you're talking about a move post-Brexit, for which the residencia requirements haven't yet been announced by Spain.

The following is the worst case scenario, and may not come to pass, but the amount of finances to prove is similar to what Boris requires of EU citizens moving to the UK:

i wish you well with your plans to move to Spain, however, please note that conditions for entry to live in Spain may well change in the post Brexit world, the key is research and on the Forum you will find many helpful members and I would direct you to Jim's Guides which can be accessed using the tab at the top of the webpage.

When I moved out in 2018, I'd already decided on the northern Costa Blanca as my destination for several reasons. Greener and a bit more temperate than down south, second most healthy place in world to live (according to WHO, but don't tell President Chump), fabulous beaches and countryside, equidistant to France and Portugal, proximity of Valencia.

I then spent many hours on tinternet drawing up a list of interesting properties. Made a week long trip over in the February to view 18 properties and ended up doing a deal on a house with British owner (holiday home for him). This was the risky bit; I suppose I'd have considered renting if I'd not found the ideal house.

Retired end of April, but sold my UK house and vacated it six weeks before, lodging with a friend in the meantime. Engaged the services of a Spanish based removal company run by a Brit in Almoradi to move all my stuff out in March and store it in Spain for two months. Bought and took possession of my Spanish house in early May and arranged with the removal guy to move all my stuff in shortly thereafter.

Easy!

Always good to have an option on the passport, we are fortunately from Northern Ireland so have dual nationality and both British and Irish passports.
