Hi

I have a house in GA and come out about 4 times a year. say 12 weeks. I’ve got a 12 year old runaround car left outside the property. Due to the current situation I probably won’t be out till 2021. The ITV and insurance are due and it makes me wonder if I want the hassle of keeping it on..My wife and I are both in our 70’s and maybe renting would be a better .

Be grateful for any thoughts or advice.

John

Depends a bit on the time of the year you take your breaks. If during busier times then renting can be very high. High prices rental agencies will say are due to high insurance costs. If you take their full cover you’re talking thousands in rental every year, if you don’t then you’ll have to lodge thousands every year, as a guarantee will be needed for each rental. You’ll probably know already and can find plenty on here and on other forums about the scams some dubious rental agencies use to hold onto some of your deposit. Old scratches, dents etc blamed on you. Different folk have have described being charged for the same dent on the same car at different times where the renter never bothers to fix it. Taking out an annual holiday accident auto policy in the UK or other countries is fairly cheap & will help you recover your deposit money but it can be difficult to get the necessary paperwork, invoices etc from some renters to give to them. You’ll still also have to lodge a fairly large deposit each time with the renters anyway as they don’t won’t recognise these policies at the rental desk. Overall spending 12 weeks or longer per annum in Spain I would rather own a car than rent one.
