We bought our holiday home in June, done one week in june, one in July, missed August and back 10 sep for ten days. Had €500 taken from our account for the quarter! We can’t work out how much is a liter of water charged at? What do other people pay? Property does have a pool but we haven’t filled it? Scared to brush my teeth now!

Hahahaha, you know water is not that expensive here.

I am absotuly sure you have a leak. If you close everything maybe you can see the counter moving up. I would call a plumber to fix it as soon as possible. I am pretty sure that the water company will refound you part of the bill since you can prove there is a leak. I think that the company try to contact you when they see a big bill because they imagine like me that there is a leak.

Regards, Miguel

Definitely got a leak, contact your water company and a plumber asap, quarterly bill for two of us in an apartment on permanent basis is around 70-80€, no more than that.

It does sound like a leak. Always turn off the water (from inside AND outside at the meter box ) That way you wont be charged for any leakage. You will have standing charges even when not there, as mentioned above, usually about 35 to 45 every 2 or 3 months (depending when your water company charge)

Are you sure there was not an outstanding debt from a previous owner?

When you buy a property here you become responsible for any outstanding bills!

Yeh good post above. However if you had a decent solicitor/Lawyer working for you on the conveyance they would make sure these debts are paid by the seller, before the sale goes through. Hope this was the case for you Jules18.

We had the same issue as you except ours was for €764. Checked for leak and water company also checked. Turned out a new neighbour had been using our water as it’s a communal external box. Unfortunately we were stuck with paying the bill as she denied it even though we had other neighbours as witness.we were able to pay over a few months-hopefully this won’t be the same for you. Water company actually told us it would have been better if there was a leak as there’s part of your bill which allows for refund due to leak-talk to water company ASAP-they sent the guys out same day

Apart from the leak, when you make a new contract with the water or electricity company, they usually charge around 120-150€ for the "installation" of the new counter
