Diesel or petrol
Hi just wondering what the situation is in Spain with regards diesel cars? We’re looking for a car as ours has died but not sure if diesel is ok or is it like the UK.

Everything has it's pros and cons. For the last 20 years I prefer diesel, engine lasts longer and refuelling is cheaper.

But is Spain wanting to get rid of diesel cars like the UK?
UK tax for my diesel Land Rover Discovery is GBP585, in Spain it is about €150.
"There are currently 5 low emission zones in Spain. These are in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Valladolid. Only the zone in Barcelona is permanently valid. The other zones are weather-related air protection zones and are only activated in the event of severe air pollution.Aug 13, 2021"
Judging by this, I would guess that any clampdown on diesel cars is many years behind the UK.

You’ll get more miles from a diesel engine & it’s currently around 13c a litre cheaper than petrol. Less wear & tear too, mainly change the oil & filter regularly.

I thought petrol and diesel cars are being phased out in favour of electric?

This is supposed to be happening, but wont be for a while. There are more electric cars about now and the electric points are more available in some areas than others. I was told yesterday that there are plans for low emission zones in Alicante too. Not sure if that's just the city or the region.

There are lots of electric charging points being installed around this area and the large shopping centre at Ondara has just blocked off a large car parking area and installed at least half a dozen car charging spaces and equipment. So I would think that they will be expecting trade!

I would go with diesel for the reasons given above. I have heard nothing about combustion engines being banned here.. It is purely a stupid UK issue driven by the greenies who are causing so many problems in the UK. Why the government believes their claptrap I'll never understand.

There is talk of banning fossil fuel vehicles here the same as anywhere else. There is also LEZ coming into effect in Alicante at the end of 2022. Reducing the number of parking spaces in Alicante because of the restricted number of vehicles being allowed to enter. Why should Spain be any different than other European countries.
