I think you're talking about the "Carta de Invitación". Although it is referenced on the Gov.UK website, the British Embassy in Madrid has said that UK citizens are unlikely to be asked for one, so long as you have a return ticket that shows your visit won't exceed 90 days. Spanish border control could also ask you to prove you have access to sufficient funds for the duration of your trip - again, unlikely, but a credit card with a reasonable credit limit would suffice.
