Hello

I have been asked the question by my architect whether we would prefer a saltwater pool or chlorinated pool. Whilst I know that a saltwater pool uses a generator to make the chlorine and therefore (should be) lower maintenance in the long run, I'm more interested in our specific intended use of it.

We plan to come over for say six months at a time so the pool will be unattended for long periods, therefore it seems uneconomical to leave the saltwater generator using electricity all this time to maintain the water balance in the pool?

Also I'm lead to believe saltwater pools are much more expensive to install initially?

As much as I like the idea of a saltwater pool I'm not sure its suitable for us? Any ideas/advice anyone?

Thanks.

Having had at least ten years repairing and maintaining pools, I would say go for a chlorine one, not a salt system.

With a salt system, it is difficult to keep the correct level of generated chlorine and you are constantly having to adjust the regulator up or down as the level fluctuates. Then, from time to time, as with any pool, it will be necessary to "shock" the pool water (when it is starting to turn green) and you cannot do this with a salt system alone, you have to revert to good old-fashioned chlorine anyway.

In my experience too, the diodes of the salt system fail about every three years or so and are expensive to replace.

I am sure, too, that a salt water pool would have a significantly higher initial cost, albeit only for the salt generating equipment - the actual structure of the pool will be no different.

But all this is only my personal opinion, based on a lot of experience. It could be that there are other members out there who have managed to keep their pools sanitised and blue using only salt. I just haven't come across anybody who has!

Geoff.

I agree with sticking with the usual chlorine pool.  Salt water pools are a fad.

The technology and chemistry are very well established and easy for even a lay person to take on.

My neighbour revamped his pool to salt water two years ago and like you is over only for six months of the year and he is already experiencing corrosion, deterioration of pool equipment and maintainance issues....

The additional cost is around 1500 euros they are actually better for you although the process produces chlorine but at lower levels if you are unsure probably better to stick with a standard system and if you wish you can convert it later.
