They are solar water heaters. The 'drum' contains water. Some also have an immersion heater for if the hot water runs out and it's no longer daytime. The solar panel heats the water in the drum during daytime.

Turn off the immersion heater in your house and see if you still get hot water after a sunny day. If not, then the solar heater isn’t working.

great devices and very eficient, you have to run water to see the result, the primary sealed circuit has to be full of water and corrosion inhibitor, i put a mixing valve in the secondary circuit to ensure max 60 degrees feed to boiler, i cant put my hand on the valve most of the year as its too hot, you should have it looked at as its free heat.

Hey Neil, i use Frederic from KVA Solar on 656 980 451, his wife Conti organises the work and she is on 615 813 540, Frederic is  a proper engineer who knows his stuff, he made me the special seals and even left me a spare set, local plunbers dont want to know, you will really get payback from your device.  Best, George.

Sorry for going on about this but how do they work, do they fill themselves up like a toilet or do you have to do something with a valve.

Thanks
