Hello Alan n Lesley

Thank you for responding. We have just moved to Gran Alicant from Australia. We are waiting to sign rental papers to move into an apartment in Arenals del Sol.

Is it so that we have to have a translator to go with us to apply for Registration and an NIE number?

Also what is the best option for Medical Insurance. My husband has a Dutch pension and thinks he may be able to get health

insurance through them.

Thank you

Ann n Louis

Hi Bobbie

We are about to get a rental apartment in Arenals del Sol and need to know about registering ourselves. Do we need a translator to go with us?

Also, are there different companies to choose from for electricity and water supply?

Thank you

You will need an NIE (national identity number) whether you are permanent residents or part-time.  For us in Gran Alacant  you get that from from the National Police (there are 3 kinds: Civil Guard, National and Local) as we come under Santa Pola and Elche district.  I believe Arenals  might be different but I think you can get NIE from a number of places..   Need to get a 'Padron' certificate first to prove you have a legitimate address in the area..  We got ours from the Ayuntamenta office inside the doctors surgery above the library in Gran Alacant, again I am not sure if that will be the same for you.  It is a sub office and only opens from 10 am - 1pm.  You will need passports, proof of rental with address and any other relevant ID you may have.  The agency or person you rent from should be able to put you in the right direction.  Getting the appointment for the NIE seems to be the hardest part, you can download the forms from internet.  Telephoning we have found is very hard as my husband has lost his and we tried that but got nowhere.  You used to be able to turn up at Elche National Police Station BEFORE 8 am and be given an appointment that day but I am not sure if that still works.  You will also need two passport photographs each.  We did ours by ourselves first time round (took 3 visits as we did not have right paperwork) but our lawyer did a change of  address when we bought a property.  A translator is a definite advantage as although sometimes there is someone who knows English it is not guaranteed.  We found that although they say they speak no English if you try even the littlest bit of Spanish you find that they will try to help you with as much English as they can.  We use Ibedrola for electric (will give you it in English) and the water is Hidraqua.  If you are getting a translator try two or three and ask prices - they vary quite a bit.  There are also plenty of local companies who will do your NIE etc if you pay them and it is not too expensive.  Hope this helps.

Hi Bobbie

Thank you so much for giving this information, it's been very helpful. I'll speak to the Real Estate agent on Friday and they may be able to help also.  Let them earn their commission

We collected a free Gran Alicant magazine today and they have some ads for translators etc so may give them a call.

Nothing can happen until we sign papers on Friday so I'm just in research mode at the moment.

Thank you again.. certainly appreciate your help

Ann
