Hi Jill, I,m not aware Cajamar has anything to do with Caixa, in fact I,m horrified as Caixa insured my property in 2006  and their insurance refused to pay us for a total ransacking causing us a loss of £20,000.

They are part of Caja Rural although their rules are differrent. I,ll have to look into that cos that would disappoint us. Please remember if any post is helpful, then please hit the "helpful" button at the bottom of the post. I think most people forget, but its quicker than a thankyou reply and keeps us all helping.

Regards

Pauline.

Thanks Pauline, I have been hitting the 'helpful' button - honest :)

Looks like Caixaltea is part of Cajamar - website is the same https://www.grupocooperativocajamar.es/caixaltea/en/comun/

But Caixa bank is definitely different, sorry to hear about your burglary, that is awful to find out they wouldn't cover you.

Best

Jill

Jill, you,re right that was news to me, but it must have been recent as I hadn,t seen that on the internet (or maybe I just never saw it). I cant change that and I,m happy with the bank so I,ll stick with them. I wouldnt insure my property with any spanish bank. In fact any spanish insurance company either. I insure with Towergate as a holiday home and they,ve paid out twice with no problem since. Caixa insurance refused payment because we didnt tell them our land was to be confiscated to put the AVI traintrack on and if I had they wouldnt have accepted the cover. We never knew it was happenning, our purchasing solicitor didnt tell us and 3 solicitors we employed to fight them(costing more money) only the last one said, walk away before the stress kills you. You wont win, because you should know everything about the property you own, its your responsibility. I would not buy a property in Spain ever again. As our house is only worth half of original price and difficult to sell with a train 50ft from front door, we propose to keep it till death or until we cant use it and give it to cancer research. Let them sell it.

Regards

Pauline.

Regarding Cajamar - before I had read Pauline's advice in detail I had completed an enquiry form on Cajamar's website asking if I could apply for a non-residents account online or if I needed to attend the local office. I received a call back yesterday from Cajamar and when the chap realised my Spanish wasn't up to a detailed conversation he asked if a colleague of his could call me back in 5 minutes. His colleague called me back immediately and explained very clearly and courteously in excellent English that I could call into the local office at any time and they would help me open a Wefferent account. This would be completely commission free if used online and I would need to take the following into the office (not all needed but as many as possible):

  • Passport
  • NIE paper document
  • Proof of tax residency (payslips, P60, HMRC letter of residency)
  • Details of any current Spanish bank account.
He was really helpful and welcoming - so I'll be opening an account as soon as I return. He also said that I could ring anytime and there would be someone able to help in English.

I am so happy you had a very positive response from Cajamar as I have. I think its a bank that most expats dismiss because they dont guarrantee to have an english speaker in all branches like Sabadell and others. How daft, we managed with very limited spanish. They do have a dedicated english phone service if needed too. Put any questions into google translate before you go, it helped us no end.

Pauline.

Ray,  gosh how often do you require bank personal service? I havent been in a bank branch in Uk for over 6years. Atm takes in cash too. I never even visited the last 2 out of 3 banks I,ve been with as they had no branches in my town. I have changed banks every year (past 3 anyway) to gain their "extra bribes" and all done online

Shame Spain not so generous!!

Of course you can have a branch service if you need it but there's a charge of 7€ that month. NOT every month. I think this still beats Sabadell and other banks that are trying to charge even residents for having accounts.

At the end of the day its personal choice.

Regards

Pauline.

I've found visiting bank branches in Spain worse than visiting the dentist for root canal treatment. Massive queues, no order, people pushing in front of you at the last minute, staff having no authority to make refunds that they admit you are due........etc.

Ray, you described it perfectly.! I too hate visiting bank branches in Spain. I had to visit Cajamar in September when I arrived in Spain without my purse! I know "how could I have travelled all this way for 3months stay and I have no cards , no driving licence" what a nightmare. Thank goodness never stopped by police when driving. Anyway I went immediately past the queues, round the back to the "personal gestor" who we,d opened account with and ordered a duplicate debit card. No fee for branch use but charged set fee of 3€ for a duplicate card. My brilliant hubby had his wallet and since retiring and not using his cards couldnt remember a single pin!! He didnt have the Cajamar card as I kept both in my wallet (just in case your wonderring).

Regards

Pauline.

Hi TMarshall57

I'm trying to find out from Cajamar what we need via email - not being as helpful sadly.   I'm in UK at the moment and don't have a spanish residence/rented or owned.  We hope to move out later July to rent.  But my question is....do you need a spanish address to open an account with Cajamar (as I'm keen to get some months bank statements building up so when we do go in July we can crack on with Residencia application).   We aim to go over in May to sort out some things including a bank account but no good if they will need a spanish address from us on the day.

Hope that makes sense?

thanks

Jill
