Good evening all, sadly my father in law passed away on Christmas eve in Torrevica Hospital. We have tried to get over to be with mum but as you can imagine it has been a nightmare trying to get to Spain. Mum thinks she can get back to the UK on Friday. However we have heard conflicting stories about X pats not being able to get out.

Mum now has dads Ashes and all the documents and she holds an Irish passport.

Can anyone provided actual advice if she can fly back to the UK.

Thanks in advance

Elliot

The UK, as far as I am aware, has not "banned" non-residents from entering. The 2 additional requirements compared to "pre COVID" are:

(i) completion of the "passenger locator form" 48 hours prior to travelling (see https://www.gov.uk/provide-journey-contact-details-before-travel-uk)

(ii) with effect from this week, proof of a negative COVID19 test within 72 hours of flying - I'm yet to see confirmation of the actual date but suspect it will be pre-Friday - see https://www.gov.uk/government/news/mandatory-covid-19-testing-introduced-to-bolster-border-measures

Most airlines allow carriage of ashes. As Ryanair is the main operator still flying, I've provided a link below around what they require for the carriage of ashes - https://www.ryanair.com/tr/en/useful-info/help-centre/faq-overview/Baggage/carriage-of-ashes

(NB - Easyjet conditions appear similar and can be googled).

Best of wishes in these trying times.

Hello Elliot

This is a very sad dilemma your mum in law is in but right now, as anxious as she is to leave, with the virus being so rife everywhere,  she would be safer to stay here a bit longer until things improve.

You didnt mention her age or whether she is eligible for a vaccination here - if so, that would be helpful to her before she travels anywhere.

Dont know whether she has good friends/neighbours here but if  she could get some support  to help her get through the next few weeks that would be good.

There is some good travel advice in other posts but dealing with all that in her distessed state will be difficult.

If you want to p.m. me with anymore details please do, if she is in Torrevieja area I am happy to make contact with her, if you think it would help.

Cheers

Thank you for everyone's help.

My mum is 69' sadly she has no one near her be it friends or relatives. She was deeply in love me father in law and she is missing him dearly.

She has been getting some help from a local nurse (debatable) at a charge of 65 euros a time. We are having doubts that these people might be genuine or trying to scam my mum.

I am so glad to hear that your mother in law will be able to fly back to the U.K. on Friday. I can only begin to imagine her intense sorrow snd great loss. It’s difficult for people to understand the depth of feelings between a married couple but my husband and I have been married for almost 47 years and are joined at the hip. We do everything together and are exceptionally happy with our lives. I, therefore can imagine the heartache your Mum is feeling and she needs to be with her loved ones knowing that they will be grieving with her, she has lost her best friend and is suffering.

Please send my deepest sympathy to her. I’m sorry I’m not in Torrevieja now  as I would happily spend some time with her and try to offer some comfort. Poor lady has been through a very tough time, she’s lost her other half, had a funeral and now collected his ashes and alone with no family to support her. It’s time for her to go home and thank goodness she will be with you on Friday. Wish her well for me.

Sincerely,

Rosemary.
