I hope you don’t mind my joining your forum but I was a loss to know what to do for the best. I am not a resident but I do visit Guardamar regularly, staying at friends apartment on Urb. Moncayo.

I have managed to book a flight on Monday with Iberia to Gatwick but I’m very concerned about the risks of being close to people at the airport and particularly on the plane. So I have a dilemma.

I’m 75 yrs old, reasonably fit but have underlying medical conditions following cancer operations but no respiratory issues. I am on my own in the apartment and have no support network in place should I require help to collect shopping or medication.

I was wondering if there was any arrangements in place set up your forum, to assist people in my position should I decide not to fly home on Monday or be unable to go due to another flight cancellation.

Many Thanks

Stephen Banholzer

Sorry but you'd be on your own so the best advice would be to stay where you are.

It's not only a crazy idea but to be brutally frank we (Spain) don't want you.

Medical facilities here are stretched to the limit already and as an obviously at risk individual it would be totally irresponsible to parachute into the middle of the calamity, you could easily fall ill with the virus and as a result potentially deprive a Spanish citizen of life saving treatment and maybe cost them their life.

It might well be moot anyway as there are many reports of people being denied checkin for flights if they cannot show that they are resident in Spain so returing home.

I am in Spain now and have flight booked to Gatwick on Monday.

I was asking what support there may be locally, if I was not able to catch the flight.

Sorry, don't know about support here but it appears there are good community groups in uk to look out for neighbours.

Regarding concerns on flying back:  when we flew home on Monday the plane was only half full and the airport at Alicante eerily quiet. Hardly anybody flying, neighbours flew back from Denmark Wednesday - only four passengers on board and heard of another where there was only two. So the risk of contact with others minimal, I am guessing the staff will want to do their best not to have contact with you or anyone!

If you are not able to fly back I am sure there will be people local to you who read this forum,  who will only be happy to support you by doing shopping and collecting medication on your behalf.  People on this forum are always willing to help anyone that needs it.

Try not to worry just keep the forum informed on how you get on.

Vivienne

Thankyou so much VivienneAnn. Just needed a few comforting words in case my flight is cancelled and I find myself back in Guardamar. I’m sure you are right and there will be people locally willing to help. Not heard from anyone yet but if needed there will be someone.
