Does anyone own, tax & insure a car in the UK whilst resident in Spain, if so where do they get their insurance from. I have phoned around (UK Insurance companies) but they are saying you have to be a UK resident

How long have you been resident? You have to transfer to Spanish plates within six months.

Thank you for your reply I have a car in Spain with Spanish number plate and I stay in Spain for about 9 - 10 months of the year the rest of the time is in the UK where I have a UK registered car  however most insurance companies in the UK state you have to live in the uk 6+ months of the year. I have found one company that will quote and they are phoning me back tomorrow. I might sale the car and hire in the uk when needed,

Hello Jan, I,m following this post as I too made many requests from insurance Companies without luck as it was the major reason for not applying for residency at this moment as wanted to spend time in UK not all in Spain. Did you have any problem as owning and taxing car as a Spanish resident? If you have someone(relative) who can own the car in Uk you can become named driver but insurance would be on a years basis with most insurers. Unfortunately we had no one. If you find an insurer to enable this please let me know.

Regards

Pauline.

I have recently got a quote from https://www.keithmichaels.co.uk/get-expat-quote/index.php?view=step1 who specialise in insurance for expects the quote I got was £200 more than the cheapest renewer price if I was still resident. I have decided to sale my car as it’s 10 years old any way and hire a small fiat 500 for 10 weeks which would workout much the same as if I Kept my car without the hassle of worrying about Mot, serviceetc

Sorry to hear you didnt get a reasonable quote, and it confirmed what I too discovered. I worry about getting a Spanish car for our 6mnths use for same reasons, itv, servicing , parking at airport, so this March will be first time to take our Uk car via Santander ferry to use for 3mnths as equally scared every time we hire, 160kms round trip to airport each month to change the vehicle as maximum time for hiring is 30days. Prices this year for hiring have been abnormally high, had cars before for 100€ and less for a month, this year over 200€ March-June, and the worry if they falsly charge for damages too.

Our Spanish insurer covered our UK-registered car. Liberty Seguros, arranged via Britannia Legals. Online tax etc works fine, as there is no longer an insurance check when taxing a car (apparently it is now a criminal offence to drive uninsured)
