Hi my husband and I will be going to England in October until the beginning of February to visit my 92 year old mum and spend Xsmas with her.

We live in Castellon area of Spain, does anyone have any idea how I get our, our  three months of prescriptions for us both, to take with us, we live in an area where there are in our village 5 or 6 Brits and they all go home for cars, treatment etc. we are both on the S1, resident (green card)but the doctors seem unable to know what form to issue us with, our farmacia says doctor issues paperwork, doctor says farmacia. Any help would be gratefully received.

Sandy & Phil Noble.

I assume you're asking because you've got a Spanish twelve month prescription for your medications, but won't be here to draw them.

In that case, buy them from the chemist and keep the bar code sections from the packages and get a receipt for the purchases. On your return, present your prescription, bar codes and receipt, and your chemist should reimburse you. Check with your chemist first that they operate this system. You may well decide that the cost is so minimal that it's not worth bothering about.

The alternative is to go to a doctor in the UK with your EHICs. If it's necessary treatment, then they should give you a UK prescription.

Non UK residents cannot use an EHIC in UK.

Non-UK residents cannot use a UK issued EHIC card when seeking medical treatment there, but expats who want treatment in the UK can show a EHIC issued by their new country, i.e. Spain.

In that case it would be a 'Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea' or 'TSE' not an EHIC and you would only get one of those if you were working in Spain and paying into the social security system.

In point of fact however as S1 holders you are entitled to free health care in UK just the same as anybody legaly residing there so actually you need neither.

The last two posts are confusing me now. It used to be that Spanish residents like us were issued with a TSE, but that situation changed some years ago, and we had to get EHICs from the UK - strictly speaking these are EHIC-E. Has that been reversed and I've not spotted it?

GOV.UK are still saying an EHIC-E can be used in the UK:

If you are a UK state pensioner living in Spain and registered for healthcare with an S1, the UK is responsible for issuing your EHIC to use on a temporary stay in the UK......

The UK website says visitors from other EU countries should use an EHIC from their country. Would a SIP card suffice?

I wouldn't have thought so, Ray. A Spaniard visiting the UK is only officially covered if he's got a TSE.

Hi Jim,

I was correcting Movingon's post, not yours.

As you say, Cheperut and her husband can still use their UK-issued EHIC - they're entitled to do this as they both have S1s.

Kind regards,

Kim
