A couple of days ago we had an official from retsagas said they were coming to check our gas bottles and gauges which he did and then went on to say the gauges weren't satisfactory and will need renewing this also happened to our neighbour as they were doing the whole urbanisation. I do understand that it is good to have these checks done, but do these checks have to be done by one of the major gas suppliers. Is it a legal requirement that you need a gas certificate which lasts 5 years, if you do need the certificate can other people issue them for example if I have a gas fire can I take it to the supplier to be certificated or get someone else from outside for the hot water boiler. Are these guys on commission one of our Spanish Neighbours said we shouldn't let these people in, but I'd sooner be safe than sorry

Someone tried that on me a while ago, and I told him to go on his way rejoicing.

Yes, you should have an inspection at least every five years, and will receive a boletín if your gas installation passes the checks.

Before getting the inspection done, make sure the seal on the regulator looks good, and that the orange pipe is within the expiry date printed on the side of it. If you've any doubts, it would cost less than €15 to change them both yourself, and should only take about five minutes.

Contact Repsol or Cepsa as appropriate to find out who they authorise to carry out inspections in your area.

In future arrange that inspection yourself. Don't let anyone onto your property if they haven't got a prior appointment.

I wish people would take more notice of this forum. The gas scam has been doing the rounds for ages.

Lock the gate at the front of your property. Then they cannot even get to your door.

People turn up, shake the gate or shout me. I go out listen to what they have to say over the gate. Then walkway and leave them there if it sounds dodgy

Just take the empty bottle to either a Repsol or Cepsa petrol station, depending on what type you've got, and exchange it for a full one. Other places stock bottles as well - for example the petrol station near the fountain roundabout in Almoradí sell both types.

I suggest keeping an eye on the forum for anyone selling empty bottles in this area. The going rate is only €10, and it's best to have a backup.

If you're still without transport you can get bottles delivered for a few cents extra, but first have to have your appliance(s) inspected. Otherwise, talk nicely to your neighbours.

No, Mike, you only need a boletín if you want gas delivered.

In my case I wait until I've got two empties, stick them in the boot, park near the metal cage with bottles at the petrol station, go into the pay desk, ask for 'dos butano, por favor', pay, go back to the car, someone comes out and puts the new bottles in the boot. I could put them in the car myself, but everywhere these days makes an extra few bob by charging a handling fee, so I usually let them do it.
