Health insurance for Residency - S1

Hola

My wife and I moved here a few weeks ago and are in the process of getting Residency. I am a little confused by the requirements for health insurance and would appreciate any advice anyone could offer.

We are both retired and have S1 documents, but obviously this doesn't provide health care until we are registered with the SS, which, as I understand it, we can't do until we have residency. I'm also hearing that we need health care in order to acquire residency, which seems like a bit of a catch 22. We are also genuinely wary of not being fully covered at the moment.

Would you recommend we take out private insurance until our residency is established? And if so, could anyone recommend a good company. We are in Guardamar del Segura.

In my opinion best to get professional advice and the man to speak to is Alfonso at Gran Alacant Insurances, they advertise on the Forum, see their advert on the right hand side of the Forum Homepage. We were helped by Alfonso when seeking PHI for our Residencia and he has helped with renewals since then. He will be able to advise and help you with all the options.

As retired UK citizens with S1 forms, you do NOT need private health care to apply for residence at this moment. Your S1 forms are the evidence that you are entitled to access public healthcare. Although the UK government has said this will also be the case after 2020, that remains unknown at the moment.

I fully agree with Herefordjack....Your S1 forms are proof of future healthcare and will be accepted as such. You don't need private healthcare!

Thanks John. I'm still taking advice, which at the moment is telling me that as long as we have S1 documents we shouldn't need PHI on top. Really appreciate the recommendation and will be following up on that if it turns out we do need it after all.
