Random question that? Everybody will have different views on the huge variety of cheeses, so don’t know how anybody’s recommendation can be gauged??

Hi Cath

The only cheese i buy is from overseas. Which is iceland and waitrose.

I buy their strongest cheddar.

Soft cheese i get from mercadona supermarket.

Ive not seen any other cheeses here.

I really don’t want to upset anybody, but there are many Spanish cheeses and I don’t understand how one can go to a Spanish supermarket and not ‘see’ them? Many years ago, Spain was not a ‘dairy’ country - I remember butter as only available in semi-liquid form in a tin!!!! - but refrigeration has altered that. Most of the Spanish supermarket chains - ie Mercadona/Masymas/Consum to name but three - have either pre-packed cheese in the chiller sections near to butter/yoghourt/cream or usually a large selection next to the cooked meats counter which one may buy by weight.

There are cow cheeses(vaca/sheep cheeses(ovens)/goat cheeses(cabra). There are hard cheeses and soft cheeses, blue cheeses.

They are not the same as hard English cheese, nor as diverse as French - and one may buy the more commercial French cheese here also.

Carrefours supermarket has a huge variety from all over.

To recommend a particular one is difficult - friends insist that the best Spanish cheese is from small producers on the markets and they do supply very interesting cheese when we have supper with them.

Suggest that you screw up your courage and brave the staff on your local counter - if you are polite and try to ask them in Spanish, they will be very willing to help you. Or just point at something interesting and buy a small piece!!!! Look up useful words in a dictionary before you go and string them together - you’ll be amazed at how helpful everyone will be!

Good Luck and have fun!

Just to add my two-pennyworth as a cheese lover.

The Spanish goats' cheese and blue cheese are quite good, although in thirteen years I've yet to find anything as good as Yorkshire ewes blue.

As RayD says, look on the markets and test what they have on offer. I once did this at a medieval market up in Xativa and got two cheeses from artisan producers that were packed full of flavour and delicious.

The large producers who supply the supermarkets, in the main, provide cheeses that I find far too bland, although you might occasionally come across a nice manchego.

I was once told by a Spanish friend that, if I wanted to make a friend of a Spaniard, I should give him a piece of vintage or Canadian cheddar.

When my wife goes back to the UK, I often get her to bring me back some Canadian cheddar. Hard cheeses freeze well, albeit they go a bit crumbly.

To a degree I would agree with Jim re the supermarket mass produced items except that if one finds somewhere with a large enough selection- I hate to mention Carrefour again! - one can find flavoursome cheese. Oveja usually being better than vaca. Also Supercor, the supermarkets run by El Corte Ingles, do have interesting selections of all sorts.
