Tried lighting a fire last night. Just moved in... smoked out. Help?

I'll hazard a guess that you don't have steel mesh covering the cowl on your flue, and that there's a birds nest in it.
If you can get at, remove the cowl and start fishing. If that doesn't work, ignite a fire lighter and drop it down. If that doesn't work, attach a brick to a rope and bung that down.
Or ring Sooty on 660 478 881 and see if he covers your area.
Failing that, any chimenea shop will have a sweep on tap.

I got it sorted. The stove itself hadn't been cleaned for ... ever! The flue was clear but the air inlet and exhaust baffle were chocka! Thanks.
