Can anyone please advise on some options  for us to drive from the Midlands to Jalon. We have just bought a left hand drive camper van so we can stop enroute. We will have our dog with us so prefer not to do any sort of ferry or train journey where he will have to be left for any length of time. I’ve looked at lots of websites and they all seem to recommend different routes so I’m thoroughly confused at the moment. All suggestions gratefully received. Thank you 😊

Lizzy, I have done the journey from Calais to the Costa Blanca quite a number of times now, and have gradually honed the route to make it more enjoyable and to save large amounts of money on tolls, whilst still getting there quickly enough.

As you have a dog, I would highly recommend that you use the Channel Tunnel, as you can be with him/her in the car during the 35-minute crossing.

If you would like a copy of my route notes, please send me a private message with your email address.

Geoff.

When driving from Cherbourg to La Zenia we used Via Michelin to plan the route, excellent detail including where and how much the tolls were. We then broke up the journey by pre-booking pet friendly hotels en route but using a camper van you will find lots of service areas that you can park at and relax. On some Ferries you will also find they have kennels that you have access too during the crossing or cabins where dogs are allowed, we were able to take our dog out on deck and not have him shut away for long periods. The long journey went smoothly and our dog was not upset by the experience.

Hi Lizzy, as John56 says, Michelin are really good and it may be an idea not to get too fixed on a specific route in case of roadworks and accidents. If you are not on a fixed timetable, you can see where the tolls are and divert to look at  places of interest on the way. The tunnel is completely hassle free with doggy areas both sides. I looked at the ferry to northern Spain but our dogs were too large for the cabins and have never been caged or separated so we ruled that out. The first time, on our viewing trip, we avoided many of the tolls, as per the Michelin site but when we moved down we just kept to the E15 route the whole way and the only thing we planned was to be passing Paris between 3-4 am and we had no hold ups. We had two overnight stops both times and found it easier not to plan these in advance. If you are only going to be doing it the once, I would recommend crossing the Millau viaduct on the A75 but the best thing has got to be watching the temperatures rising along the way!

LizzyB did you see my post above?

You haven't replied to it, or even marked it as helpful, which is disappointing.

Geoff.
