Hi all,

My wife and I are thinking of moving to your area (at the moment we're leaning towards the Jalon Valley but that could change) and we're concerned about the mosquitoes as we've heard that they can be a real problem. My wife is a magnet for them! Can anyone let us know what their experience is with them?

Thanks a lot

Greg

Mosquitoes are an unfortunate fact of life here, together with other small biting insects, there is no way of avoiding them.

The very best solution, assuming you could afford it, is to have a specialised anti mosquito system installed around your property. It releases deterrent at regular intervals and is guaranteed to keep your property free of them. The next best thing is to have the area treated every month, which works like magic and although not cheap, isn’t as costly as the installation.

Failing the provision of these, you need to invest in mosquito coils for outside, and a mix of plugin devices and electric insect machines indoors. Wear clothing to fully cover any possibly exposed area and cover yourself with anti mosquito lotion. Purchase a large supply of cream to soothe the itching; personally I don’t find the local ones work and I have anthisan sent from uk.

I rarely go outside in the worst of the season as it is intolerable for me; you will also need devices plugged into your bedroom overnight or it will be miserable.

Hi Stephanie and thanks very much for your reply, much appreciated. A couple of follow-up questions if you've got the time! Do you know what such a spray system would cost roughly, both for the installation and for the monthly alternative (I know this is dependant on a few factors like size of plot etc)? Can you recommend a firm I can contact? And finally, I suspect the situation is better closer to the coast. Do you know if that's true? We would prefer to not be right on the coast as it's usually a lot busier and pricier. The Jalon Valley seemes to be lovely but now that we've discovered this problem it's really put us off. Again, thanks a lot.

Greg

When we moved here we contacted the firm in Javea who were supplying the installation.  We are miles out in the campo and to supply ind install the system around the immediate area of our house and the part of the garden incorporating the terraces where we sit was in the region of 5K plus IVA, It then required an annual maintenance fee of some 750 plus IVA which included restocking the insecticide etc. We felt that this was more than we wished to spend out of our hard won savings!!!! It originates in Florida, where I understand from them that in principle it is a commercial system used around hotels etc which presumably explains the cost. Can’t remember the name of the firm now but perhaps could research if you were interested.

The monthly spray system is more affordable, being around 100eu per month, but still too expensive for us to consider regularly. We did have it done once and would cheerfully have it again if it were less costly. So I am afraid we have to use all the coils and plug-ins.

It isn’t any better anywhere really, mosquitoes truly are a fact of life. Some people cope better than others, for instance my husband isn’t really affected badly, he finds they itch for a few minutes and then stop. As for me, I refer you to my previous post.

Friends I know are the same as me, they do not go out unless properly dressed and/or slathered in anti-mosquito lotion.

Curiously I can go walking in the campo near us, wooded mountains, and come home unbitten, wearing shorts and vest, but the minute I walk back into our property they attack. I do not know anybody here who is unaffected to some degree or other, I am afraid one either has to put up with it, or deal with it as best one can.

Hi. You may laugh at what lm about to suggest but hear me out. My wife and l have just moved to another house in Torrevieja where the mosquitoes are bad. I’ve always suffered from misquitoes but my wife recently suggested l eat garlic. Since then, l find they hardly bother me. It’s worth a try. Paul.

Hi Rob, no, I don’t think you’re mad! But garlic has been a part of our lives forever, together with chilies and various spices, so, personally, I haven’t noticed any difference! But thanks for the suggestion!

Hi

We live about 1km inland from the coast, in Playa Flamenca, and personally, I've never been bitten in 9 years - though my missus gets very occasional bites.

Any problems can be quite localised - there are 2 lakes near Torrevieja where (I'm told) mosquitoes can be a pain!!!

Cheers

Steve

I have heard that Avons skin so soft body spray and Mercadona's baby body lotion both repel mosquitoes.

We use either the Raid or Mercadona mosquito plug-ins I can honestly say neither of us have been bitten.

There are wrist bands that many shops sell which act as a repellent, I have never used one myself so cant make any comment about their efficacy.
