Hello John, I believe you can opt in to Spanish NHS after one full year of private medical insurance. Research convenio especial.

Could do with a rough idea of the first 12 months costs before I can hopefully qualify for the Spanish NHS .

I can´t help you with that as we qualify for SIP but get some quotes from Spanish insurance brokers here. We used Uma at getlegalinspain.com, have a look at her website as there is a broker in the team.

We are 61/59 years old. Our joint healthcare cost this year (private insurance) is approx 1600 Euros.

No pre-existing conditions. Some excesses (but not high). 

Friends we have spoken to are paying similar costs.

We looked at paying into the Spanish NHS. The monthly costs were very similar. The Spanish NHS had no excesses, but did not provide access to the local private hospital (with English-speaking staff).

Who is your insurance with if you don't mind me asking, and is it acceptable for getting my residency ?

And is is a good service, no problems encountered when you need to use it ?

The insurance company is DKV.

It was arranged via http://www.britannialegals.com/    

The policy was sufficient to get us our residency last August (again, assisted by Britannia Legals).

Thankfully, we haven't needed to use it yet, so I'm afraid I can't help with that one.

Importantly, the policy gives us access to services local to our home - check this before you buy a policy. There have been reports of people buying insurance, only to find that their nearest accessible doctor/clinic is miles away.

After one year I will be able to buy into the Spanish Healthcare system which will be less expensive and has no exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
