Hi, we have insurance with liberty seguras, the policy is due for renewal on 23/3.

We have obtained a like for like quote with another provider for 200 euros less and want to change insurance companies.

Having been stung with private health insurance ie cancelled via email through broker were stunned to be charged for another years premium when we and the broker believed it was cancelled, we do not want to be 'had' again.

how much notice do we have to give Liberty Seguras to change insurers? the system here seems very different to the UK where you can cancel over the phone.

Many thanks for any help you can give me

Hi, you are right in saying that the system is different to the UK, the deadline to cancel insurance is one month before renewal date according to current spanish law. You will have to contact the company to the adress shown on your policy document to find out if accepted, or alternatively by email to [email protected].

If you have taken the insurance with an agency or broker it would be advisable to ask them.

Hope this helps.

It might be worth contacting Liberty Seguras and telling them you are thinking of changing provider because you can get it cheaper.   Chances are they will come up with a different and comparable price.   We did this with our house insurance that was through Linea Directa and they actually said they would reduce the premium from 340euros to 170euros just to keep our business!  (I still went ahead with the change because the cover was actually better through Liberty Seguras).   We have done this with the car insurance with Linea Directa as well and suddenly they find they can do it cheaper than the original renewal premium!  Good luck.

thanks Purdy, we did contact liberty and they have come down 60 euros, still makes it a lot more than abbeygate but i have been told they are based in gibraltar and if we had a 'knock for knock' it can take months to process any claims as they dont have the same facilities in law as a spanish based insurer, some people have had their cars kept in the repair shop for months while a simple claim goes through, maybe thats why they're so much cheaper. i think we will stick with liberty, better the devil you know, but household insurance etc am definitely going to shop around - thanks for your advice

Jeanette, I found your post very interesting. When I moved perm to Spain I insured with IBEX also in Gibraltar, as I'd been recommended to them in the UK. All was fine until I had a minor claim when they then did everything possible not to pay out on it. In fact I very nearly posted a warning on the Forum about IBEX because in the end I felt that I had been effectively "uninsured" for 12 months at least in terms of the claims angle (obviously not from the legal angle) I've now taken out insurance through the Jennifer Cunningham Javea office.

Can I ask if your Liberty Seguros policy was bought direct from them or was it through a broker?

I've also given Sabadell more than a months notice that I want to cancel some insurance policies with them and it did take a visit to my branch and a lengthy phone call from Barcelona to get them cancelled in good time.

Steve

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply. We insured through a broker in Javea (also in Denia) called Mark Petrie, he has an office on the seafront, near the port.

regards - Jeanette

If I am cancelling anything like this I always write direct to the company myself concerned stating policy number etc.  I wouldn't rely on a second party to cancel on my behalf.  I have also sent letters recorded delivery so that I know they can't say it hasn't been received!

Thanks Jeanette, I used Mark Petrie  (Denia) for my Health Insurance and they were good.
