hi,

i intend to live 6 months in a winter let in Javea area and 6 months touring round the UK.

when i have been over to Javea before i've been hiring cars when i need them, usually for the first week or two, just to get from the airport, visit friends etc and then about 2 or three days a week when me and wife fancy a trip out etc.

i recon it would be cheaper to actually buy a small runaround car in Spain, spanish registered so i can keep it at the airport all year, quotes seem to be about 250ish euros a year to keep it at Alicante airport, instead of hiring a car, my daughter could use it when she comes over for holidays as well.

But , can i legally own a spanish car without being a resident with a fixed permant address in Spain, only my UK address.

I have an NIE number, but no 'fixed' address in spain.

i usually like to stay in a few places when i come over in the winter.

many thanks.

john

The OP has indicated he will live 6 months in Spain and 6 Months in UK. This is perfectly legal. A car can be owned by a Non Resident but not sure about the legality of no fixed abode in this situation though.

thanks guys,

just to clarify things.

i will remain a UK resident and 'holiday' in Spain for upto 6 months of the year, the remainder is spent in UK.

I have a car in UK already and do not need to return to uk in a spanish register car, i will fly back and was hoping to leave the car at Alicante Airport long term.

My concern was what is required on the Spanish registration documents of a car i purchase?

it seems like as i don't actually have a permanent address in Spain to put on the registration documents it would not be possible to purchase a car, even if i had a 6 month winter let which i used as an 'address' i would need to sell the vehicle when i returned to UK in the summer, otherwise the address on the registration document would be invalid.

looks like either i bring my own car over, or hire a car for 6 months when here, does that sound about right to you guys?

many thanks.

thanks for the rapid responses.

sounds like i need to either speak niceley to a friend and use there address, or keep on hiring a car for 6 months at a time, which does work out rather expensive.

any one know of a long term rental company that is reliable.

i have used Centauro the last few trips, but when you factor in the full insurance costs it gets a bit mad.

once again,

many thanks for the advise.

ok,

well, i've learnt something there.

i didn't know i had to be a resident of spain just to tour around and holiday if i stayed longer than 90 days, i knew i couldn't stop longer than 6 months , but not over 90 days.

so does that mean that all the people that come to spain for the winter on the various caravan sites, touring in a motorhome and do what i have previously done, which is rent a 'winter let' , have been breaking the law as soon as 91 days are up ?

sounds like a lot of hastle becoming a resident if you intend to return to uk, and goodness knows how i would sort out income tax without loads of headaches.

mmmmm. sounds like i may have to stop visiting Spain over the winter.

never mind, time to look for a new destination.

thanks for all the advise.
