Hi all

I am so pleased i have stubbled across this forum after reading all the help people have been given, i was hoping for some help myself..so here goes my husband, myself and our 8 year old son will be moving to javea or one of its surrounding areas in january..my son will hopefully get into the steve jobs school located in la sella which is why we want to rent long term around this area..i am waiting desperately to hear whether i have been accepted for redundancy from my work place and if i have it wont be so much of a panic, however if i do not receive it we will be coming out witha view of my hisband starting work within a month..he travels all over the uk for work at the moment so is not worried about finding work in one particular area..he is by trade a painter and decorator but is not afraid to do any kind of work..i guess im a bit worried as i keep reading its almost impossible to find work? i will be working from home online but will not be enough to cover all bills..any advice on where to look for placea to rent near la sella that is great for kids or a little cheaper than say javea or denia would be greatly appreciated

xx

I hate to be harsh, but, especially with a child, you have to be realistic about this. In order to work legally, as it is highly unlikely that your husband will be able to find ‘employment’ in the sense of a proper job with a contract etc, he will need to register as ‘autonomo’, self employed. This will immediately bring him into the Spanish social security and tax system; you will also require private medical insurance for residencia.

You should try to bring money as a financial cushion if your online work does not bring in enough money; also, regardless of where your work is, be aware that it is likely to be subject to tax here.

thank you so much for your honest reply

we are currently thinking that he may have to change what he does work wise as we have heard that its not easy to work as a painter and decorator..he is self employed over here and pays into tbe tax system but i understand that it would be alot harder over there so thankyou again

kind regards

Spain is full of. Builders, Bar staff, painters, cleaners, carers, handyman, customer service staff all with limited Spanish looking for work. Which isn't out there, or is sporadic. Look at every other post on this forum.

Coming out with no Spanish and no unique selling point with a child isn't a great idea. Unless you've got £1000s in savings to prop you up.

Coming to Spain and finding employment to support your lifestyle is a dream . But unfortunately it is a dream and a long way from reality

i am really hopeful that i will get redundancy from my workplace in november which will see us through for at least a year..im just trying to gage worst case scenario if i dont get it

i think maybe we will start scouring spanishjob sites etc to see if he can secure a job and maybe move over before we do

Ther is minimAL, REPEAT, MINIMAL, chance of him finding work through a Spanish online job site especially without at the least a working knowledge of Spanish. There is still a huge unemployment situation for indigenous Spanish here and Spanish companies will employ them before ‘extranjeros’. Unless you  have a saleable skill not available here, it’s simply not going to happen.

There are several perfectly legal and reputable British companies here, most of which have worked very hard for years to reach this position, but few of them will employ ‘in-comers’ especially with no Spanish language skills, and most of the building firms use ‘autonomos’ due to the high social costs of employment here.

most of the people living here from Uk are either retired or have independent means of some kind; it is not that easy any longer, the dream is just that as stated by  271935.

hi

many thanks for taking the time to reply..i thank you all for your honest comments..we have now decided to send a cv to all agency sites, businesses and register with places like indeed, monster etc..if he receives a job offer before january then he will go out alone before us to secure his job first..i will wait here to hear about my redundancy if i dont get my redundancy in november and my husband has not secured a job then we will not move out until he does..

thank you all once again it has definately given us food for thought and upped our game a lot
