Hi everyone , we are returning to Javea this year after a gap due to being eaten alive by the tiger mosquitos on our last stay ,

Can anyone tell me if we are expecting the same craziness of 2016 ? Many thanks

Hi I was also bitten alive last year. Got lots of tips from the this forum and fb to keep them at bay but don't know if they will work. Iv bought everything that people recommended to me:

Marmite

Skin so soft Spray oil (Avon) mixed with baby lemon agua de colonia (mercadona)

Lemongrass soap

Insect repellent

I hope they work for me.

Good l

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Thanks Hun , yes I got so frustrated with being bitten by the pool that I went into villa and sprayed myself liberally with Deet but as I was coming out of our vilka I slipped in the dam stuff and ended up in Denia hospital having an X-ray ! Don’t want to go through it again this year so I am hoping our local expats might suggest solutions fo4 when we come back out in a June ??

We had our garden and seating  area ‘fogged’ by one of the local franchises; this comprehensively cleared all mosquitos instantly and lasted for about a month. it does need doing every 4 weeks or so, but the sheer relief of it was worth it. Shall probably do it again this year as before done last year it was utter misery.

That’s really useful to know, thank you. Can you give the name of the company and approximate cost?

Many thanks

Kathryn

Has anyone tried the plug repellents. The ones that send out an electronic air wave

Literally ‘FOGOFF’! They advertise in the local expat rags during the season. It cost 100 eu which I agree is not cheap, gritted teeth, and no, I don’t really want to pay that every month, but I was reduced to being unable to go outside my own house otherwise. Also we live out in the camposo they had to come quite a long way.

In answer to following query re plug in sound deterrent - tried them, achieved nothing other than terrifying cats so much they would not even come in house to eat. They returned the minute we unplugged the thing.

Personally I don't like the sound of a spray that last a month as the fumes may not be good for breathing in while sitting in the garden. There are good insects too that eat the bad insects and it sounds like this "fog" spray could kill them too. Bats love mosquitos and can often be seem swooping at dusk to feed on the swarms of mossies in Summer. Also crickets and cicada feed on the bad insects too. A spray like that may be killing more than mosquito's!

There are barrier sprays and burning repellent coils that can be used around a patio area and last for around 8 hours.

One year (and each year is different) we had a sudden influx of swarms of mossies in our area. They only lasted a few days each day at dusk but in that time they were driving everyone mad!  They must have just hatched out in swarms and when this happened none of the regular body repellents seemed to work ...you could see them feeding off people and even on places where repellent was recently applied.

What we found (by recommendation at the time) was a Spanish repellent called Halley and it was a godsend . It worked where others didn't.  It can be bought in most Pharmacies (Farmacia ) in Spain and is a bit expensive compared to the normal Spanish stuff but is worth it I believe. Here's a link to what it is:

https://www.farmacialanucia.es/en/halley-insect-repellent-spray-150-p-631.html

We always keep some indoors now but in between when the biters are not so bad we just use the general Spanish repellent from Mercadona (orange bottle) that the Spanish use themselves, cheap and effective for most of the time.

I buy those little travel spray bottles and in Summer always take one out with me with some Halley spray in it,  to use if the mossies get too bad when out in the evening - Very handy!
