Much quicker to reach from Alicante airport and probably the kind of place you'd like is Altea.

I'm no tennis player but have noticed this place on the way up to the old town https://goo.gl/maps/ZSiwAtpMCsqZ3D8x7 .

The old town is wonderful - take a walk around with Street View from here https://goo.gl/maps/CJ1xTzgdxcQhCRkr9 .

Loads of tennis courts there and tennis clubs

Im Not a big drinker, and not really a fan of the benidorm type bars at all I'm afraid.!!!  I think that type of life is long behind me. Prefer more cosmopolitan, European coffee shop ,type vibe, if possible.

And when did  you visit Benidorm before?

Hi Richard,

My wife and I are going through exactly the same process of deciding between the towns before we move permanently later this year. So we spent the month of December renting a place in Denia and Javea for a couple of weeks each. It was the best thing we could have done because we experienced what both places were like in winter (and we learned it really does get cold). And that neither places are "dead" in winter time, but quite the opposite. So we will probably rent for a while when we do move over to really get a sense of the various areas, before we buy. I am not going to tell you which town we prefer because it is down to personal preference, and as someone else pointed out the one is super-easy to get to from the other. We have visited the area a number of times in the past, and every time we like it more and more.

Good luck.

Peter

Have been going to Denis since 2003 and still love it, I don’t know Jávea as well. While there is a thriving tourism sector, Dénia still feels very Spanish. There are excellent restaurants and coffee shops, a. Traditional market, a very long beach, a ferry port and a marina so lots of areas to sit and people watch. It is easy to walk or bike near the town as the terrain is flat. It can be quite chilly in winter so if looking at buying pay attention to the orientation, the more south and west frontage the better. Also position of windows, any tall buildings overlooking, whether the balcony/terrace is partially covered (perfect for summer shade) have an influence on how much solar gain the interior of the apt has and will make a big difference to winter comfort and cost of heating. Best of luck with it all.

Please don't knock Benidorm if you haven't tried it. You don't have to frequent the 'tacky booze bars' as you call them. Benidorm has cosmopolitan areas if you look beyond the so called 'English end'. Poniente Beach is an exclusive area and has numerous coffee shops and as you are on contential Europe, the majority of coffee shops sell alcohol anyway. Perhaps you have watched too much of the TV series Benidorm.

I stayed in a friend’s  mother’s  finca in Javea every year for about 15 years. We loved the mix of the old town with the narrow streets and the more developing tourist side at Sandy beach. There were a few tennis clubs in the area though we didn’t play. We often went to Denia  but found it to be more a working town and not as ‘intimate’ as Javea. Moraira is also worth a look as there were more and more Chinese shops appearing in Javea, handy for a bargain but so many. Definitely travel around the area and rent. These places are so different in summer to the winter!
