My husband and me will hopefully be moving to Javea later this year on non-lucrative visas. We have to have private healthcare with no co payments. Is healthcare insurance best obtained through a broker who knows the medical facilities in the area, or does anyone have any advice please?

My wife and I use DKV private healthcare. Our annual combined cost is around 2000 Eu (ages 63/61). This seems to be about the going rate.

You should bear in mind ....

It isn't just about cost. Don't just choose the cheapest policy. When you gain Residency/Visa/TIE, your PHI will, at least for a while, become your only source of healthcare. So accessibility and quality are the important factors.

My wife became seriously ill in 2019, and DKV have been absolutely fantastic.

BUT we have had to travel to obtain treatment and tests, mostly to the Quiron Hospital in Murcia. We have also used (I think) 8 or 9 other medical facilities in Murcia, Elche and Torrevieja.

This seems to be quite normal. We have met numerous other people "doing the rounds" - each having different insurers.

Into the detail .... insurers may quote the various clinics and hospitals that they use, but in reality, they pick and choose exactly what services they contract for at which hospital. So if your insurer's brochure says that they use (say) Quiron or IMED hospitals/clinics, the city you have to go to depends on the medical service you need. Given my wife's illness, we aren't in any rush to give up our private healthcare.

We use a GP in our village (not the health centre) and she acts as the gateway into the DKV system - and she is very good at it.

Our local GP works with DKV (which may be why our local insurance broker recommended DKV). So it seems that the most important thing is to have an insurer who works with your local GP.

We have a neighbour who uses a different insurer. Her nearest insurer-affiliated GP is 50 minutes away by car.

Here is the DKV website (with an English language option). They have several "levels" of insurance. You generally need the top level of cover (zero co-pays) for Residency.

As we get older, we generally need more healthcare, not less. So it might be an idea to consider medical access/private hospital locations when choosing where to live. Ideally get your insurer, GP and hospitals lined up.

My partner and I went with ASSSA when we moved over three years ago and have been satisfied with the service we have received. Both of us have activated the policies for various reasons and everything has been done in Denia hospitals.

The main selling point with this company was the guarantee that your premium will only rise at maximum by the inflation rate as you get older. Many other companies jack up your premiums substantially as you reach milestone ages. Make sure you check out this aspect. Our premium this year did not increase at all.

We pay around 1000€ each per annum, I'm 66 now, my partner 59.

We deal with the Javea office direct, they are a couple of doors from the Lancashire Bruja pub.

Many thanks. We know the Lancashire as we went to quiz nights there. I'll contact their office next week.

Not much to add to what the others have said. However I think my bank, Sabadell, sells DKV insurance. Just a thought but check with your bank and see if they are resellers. I only mention this as some banks waive their monthly charges if you take out insurance with them. We have house insurance with ours and pay in an agreed amount each month to escape charges. You might be able to kill two birds with one stone?

I have Asssa and its been okay. I have downloaded the Quiron app for mobile and can book any appointments directly with the hospital rather than going through the local agency office. This allows you to search for the earliest available appointment for your problem across their campuses. Can cut weeks off of the waiting time if a non emergency as I recently found out after needing my nose cauterised.

I might look into DKV as part of my annual review of insurances.
